Considering a move to the San Francisco Bay Area

I live at the southern tip of the Big Sur section of HWY 1, near Morro Bay / Turri road. Anyone is welcome to stop in and have a cup of coffee or a beer with me.

We have mountains all over CA, IMO big benefit compared to TX or OK.

Nice area, but a little damp.

Hey Tom, I'll be sure to look you up next time. We have gone down to Big Sur every trip, except when the fires kept us from making it past a mile or so from Rocky Creek Bridge. PCH between Monterey and San Simeon is our favorite stretch of road. We would live there if we could, but we'd have to find something to do from home. Maybe in a few years when I "retire" to consulting...

I've been to pashnit.com many times. It's where I go when I'm "homesick."

I also have a book called Destination Highways, Northern California. Ironically, I had already been down many of the highways inside, because I have actively searched out the best roads.

I've been there 4 times over the past year and my fiance' has been 5 times. I've seen every season, and logged about 6,000 miles on bikes(GL1800 and ElectraGlide) and in convertibles, half Miata, half Mustang.

I do love the Bay Area for what is in the Bay Area, but I equally love it because of what is to be seen within a day trip or weekend. We have been up to Eureka, over to Tahoe and Yosemite, and down to San Simeon, with much ground covered within that space.

The Mazda picture is on Nacimiento Fergeson Road. I have some pictures I took when I rode it on my Honda CB700 in 2000.

I off to take a group sports car trip through the Sierra Nevada this morning over Highway 49 through Cool, to Georgetown then out Wentworth Road and Icehouse Road down to Highway 50 and then lunch in Placerville.

Yup, that's Nacimiento road. We took it all the way to military reservation. The bike pic is at Rocky Creek bridge. Both were taken on my first trip to California.

XS650, I'm jealous.

Concord Martinez is nice, but you should check out Pleasant Hill. Just a bit more expensive, but with nicer amenities. You can take back roads to Martinez if you dont want to take the freeway. Plus, close to downtown Walnut Creek. Great climate too. It was 80F yesterday. About 15% humidity. :)

We really love Walnut Creek. Will have to check out Pleasant Hill.

If this works out, I'll move over first, just get an apartment, and then get her over. In no hurry to get a house.

Vader, I dug these out of the archives. They are from my 2000 CB700 trip on Nacimiento Fergeson road on the way to Highway 1. In one of them, you can see the same stretch of coast that was in your picture. The other was further back up the hill. Both were taken with what was a decent 2 Mpix camera then.

Near where you took your picture. You can see the same section of Hwy 1 in the distance.

Back up the road at about 2500 feet elevation.

Tonight I just got back from a sports car trip in the Sierras on Hwy 49 from Auburn to Cool to Georgetown on 193 then Wentworth Road and Icehouse Road to Hwy 50 and a great lunch in Placerville. This is a terrible place to live, are your sure you want to move here.

I was from the Bay Area since getting a job here in Texas. Other than beautiful weather the Bay Area has not much going...oh yea prepare yourself for earthquakes. When i rented a Uhaul trailer from Cali to Texas it was 700.00, from Texas to Cali it would of been 200.00.

I do miss the Bay Area but it was way too expensive to live.

We were doing a class reunion and one of the class was a former drummer ..mostly unemployed due to the drum machine. He wanted to fly out a few of his friends to perform for the reunion. The cost would have wound up being about $1000 per attendee. He thought we were all too cheap

I just said that economics changes a bit on the Left Coast. Many people can live large elsewhere on (relative) chump change.

When I go, I usually spend about $3k for 8 days, including flights and food for two, as well as hotels, car, motorcycle for a couple of days, and gas for about 1-1.5k miles of driving/riding.

D.C. was about the same cost for me.

Thanks for the pictures.

I know Northern California is expensive, and sacrifices will have to be made, mainly when it comes to how nice of a home we'll have, but we don't plan on spending much time at home...

We both love the outdoors, but hate humidity and heat. We have already explored dozens of places and have discovered dozens more in our travels. The Wing will get a LOT more use, and my tire life will certainly go down on the Impala and Deanna's Miata...

Maybe the cost will get to us at some point, but at least I will have tried it.
