Concerns about my hydrolic oil

Our company has been using Chevron Rykon AW ISO 32 oil in our CNC lathe since it was new. We buy it by the 5 gal. plastic pail from Sun Coast Resources in Houston Tx.
I just recently opened a new pail and noticed it was much darker in color than what I normally see. While I am used to seeing is an "almost clear" oil this latest stuff is about the color of weak coffee....perhaps brewed tea.
Another thing that bothered me was what looked like large transparent filaments floating within this oil.....hard to describe.
Sun Coast agreed to replace this oil, but didn't have an answer as to why it looked so different.
The question is......if I get any more of this dark looking oil is it something to be concerned with?.....or could it just be a matter of a new processing method, etc? I use this in the main hydrolic system and the automatic oiler.
Any thoughts are much appreciated.
 
if the new stuff is ok just keepan eye on it.
sometimes in packageing product types are changed over and filling line is flushed if not done right a mix of old product and new will result and off color is a good indication of that. keep a sample of any ODD oil with lot number and any floating stuff in case of machine problems you will have proof of bad oil.

PS what coolant do you use that is my main product line?

Thanks very much Bruce...good info. I didn't use any of this dark oil in the machine, but did keep a small sample for future reference if needed. When the supplier delivers the replacement pail I will open it on the spot and check it before accepting it.
On the coolant....I don't have a pail in front of me right now, but it is one of the Cimstar Qualstar synthetics. There's several choices....I want to say it's CF..??. That's all we've ever used so can't compare it to anything else. Seems like good stuff. We cut primarily D2 (about 90%) with some other materials now and then....some O1...and some stressproof.

Ah.....my memory just kicked in....it's the Cimstar Qualstar LF semi synthetic.
 
CF is chlorine free and tool life may suffer on D2 steel. But milacron is a good company with good products there line of Cimcool soluble oils like the 1011 may improve tool life if that has been a problem.

Just a thought that if you had a sample of the correct hydro oil that could be compared with a simple spectro test to the "dark with floating stuff" oil in the last pail opened and you would most likly be able to tell that the pail was not right due to labeled wrong or fill line was not cleaned out.

OK...I see what you're saying now. I've got samples of both oils stored at the shop if needed.

To wander even farther from the original subject....do you have any opinions on Malicron's stamping and drawing fluids? Let me explain....our company uses transfer presses to produce hose ferrules.....aluminum, brass, steel, and stainless steel. The process is a series of draws...then a hole punch and a trim. They constantly have problems with galling (especially on the SS) and what I consider excessive tool wear on the draw punches and dies. They are currently using a soluable oil (same white milky stuff that's been around forever) mixed in a heavy concentration on these presses. I'm wondering if one of these products from Malicron might be worth suggesting.

We make that kind product, Milicron had years ago some good ones but do not know now due to company wide product changes ask the local supplier and if he flakes maybe I can help.

What I do when asked about an application as this I like to get a 8 ounce undiluted sample of the "bad" fluid for testing so that I do not mis apply our fluid and I can give the customer back a correct product to test on line.

For 304 stainless the best to use in blanking and swageing is a product we make that is non soluble like a 20wt vis. But since part cleaning maybe an issue we make a water mixable version too, like you Milky one. Like I said we do a lab testing on stainless comparing our products to the "bad" product then can make a recomendation.

Bruce, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on these matters.....very helpful. I will suggest to our management that there may be better stamping and drawing fluids available.

Perhaps they changed additives or are using a new additive that colored the oil more Amber.

As for the filaments, take a sample of oil and put it under a microscope.

Either way, have the oil analyzed.
