I am new to BITOG and I stumbled across this study done by Consumer Reports Magazine in 1997.
Basically, in this study, Consumer Reports comes to the conclusion that 6000 mile oil changes are fine in most instances (that's what I got from it). I believe they ran 6000 mile oil changes in NY Taxis (lots of stop and go and idling--i.e. the definition of extreme driving conditions for most manufacturers) to see what 6000 miles would do to the car engine. Also, according to the study, there was no disadvantage/advantage among the many brands of oil. Synthetics, they did say, flowed well in high and low temperature conditions.
Given that study and the improvement of oils since 1997, would it be safe to conclude that the typical car owner can run a 6000 mile OCI on just about any SAE Oil (i.e. dino) and filter with no discernable disadvantages vs more frequent oil changes and higher priced synthetics? 6000 miles under those circumstances sounds like a good value money wise.
