My wife's 06 Golf calls for a 502/505 VW spec'd oil. The only readily available oils in my area that meet this spec are Mobil 1 0w40 and Syntec 5w40. Advanced had a $24.99 special so I picked up the Syntec 5w40. I'm going to run it with a Wix filter. The owners manual calls for 10K mi / 12mo. Previously I've been going with 6mo intervals averaging 5k mi. The car only has 15000mi on it. Considering that the oil meets the VW spec/is on the approved VW list, would anyone take issue with running it out to 10k mi/12mo?

Secondly a question about PennzP. I'm putting this in my 03 Buick (85k mi). Can this oil be pushed to 10k OCI if the mileage is strictly highway. The car currently has Mobil 1 Extended Performance in it and has reached 8,500 in 6mo. without the oil life monitor kicking on.

Finally, what is the max interval on PennzYB 5w30 you guys would run in an '01 Taurus? I won't be running 5w20 because there is just too much top end clatter with 5w20. I've also used 1/2qt in 2000mi since the last oil change with Syntec 5w20. The car only has 23,500mi on it.

Yes.

Yes = up to the OLM limit

On the Taurus - How long have you had it? It's almost 9 model years old with only 23.5k. If that's all you, that means you're not at a quart of consumption in 6months.

I'd go 6 months on the oil of your choice. Top end clatter with 23k with the spec'd oil. This is "unright". Can you give more details on this. Hot..cold ..idle start up only.

You had it right the first time. 6 mo. or 5,000 on the VW. 6 mo. on the Buick. 6 mo. on the Taurus.

RE: The Taurus.

I'm the second owner. The first was an 81 year old guy who passed away recently. He had alzhiemers so the vehicle pretty much set other then very occaisional use by his relatives for the last year that he owned it. All of the maintenance paperwork is in the glovebox for the last 9 years since he bought it including service on TSB fixes, coolant flush, and all the reciepts from the dealer for an oil change every 6 months.

As for the clatter, I've driven a few other Tauruses (at work) with the same motor and those just seemed to sound a bit quieter.

The consumption is what really bothers me. Other then my first car (87 Cutlass Ciera 2.5L) that had 80,000mi on it when I bought it I've never owned a vehicle that consumes more then 1/4qt every 3,500mi. Then again all of my other vehicles have either been new or low mileage fleet/lease cars (under 11k mi).

Shouldn't be a problem. I'm running Rotella T 5w-40 in ours at the same interval.

Just monitor the oil level as some of these engines like to consume significant amounts of oil.
