Cold weather?

Hello all! I usually use Mobil 1 5w20 in my ford focus 2002, but since it has gotten very cold my motor sounds really bad when I first start it in the morning! I tried switching to Mobil 1 5w30 but no diff. I have 55,000 on it and really am stumped. My 96 escort with 120,000 on it doesn't sound like this when cold! So with that I ask you experts for help Please!!

most likly not oil related since 5/20 is a good low temp oil.

I'd say try a different oil filter first then if the noise continues, maybe the valves need to be adjusted?

I agree with 55, try a different oil filter. What filter are you presently using ?? I hope its not a Fram.

Some people have said they notice more noise with Mobil 1 than with other oils.

When I changed from conventional to Mobil 1 with my favorite car (2000 Chrysler 300m), it started making bad startup noises in the morning. I changed oil to Castrol Synthetic and K & N filter, and it sounds 100% better. While Mobil 1 gets all the great ratings, my experience was bad.

I was about to post about a similar experience that relates to both mrjlube and sierraskibum's experiences. I was running a 15w40 HDEO and it was 30 degrees at night when I would start my GM 3.4L V6 and I wouldn't get any noise when starting. I just changed my oil and I am using the same filter and with a 5w30 I get noise again. Both Mobil 1 and Amsoil seem to make a groaning sound for the first 5 seconds or so when starting the car, it was never an issue with Halvoline either... This is a very confusing experience of mine.

I am about to post this kind of topic. I also have some experience with noise in the morning. I use Mobil 1 5W-20 with 1/3 VSOT filled up. I am using Wix Filter right now. I also have a loud noise during starting. I use Civic 2004 VP. But, when driving and the engine reaches the operating temp. The noise will be quieter. I hope everything is ok. Next time, I will try Amsoil 5W-20. I used to use Amsoil 5w30 in my old car (Ford Escort 96) and I like it. Do you think because the oil is thickened using VSOT. BTW, I live in Chicago. Last two days were very cold. Even the left over Mobil 5W-20 looks like 10W30. WINTER IS SUCH A PAIN DON'T YA THINK

You could try a cleanable stainless steel full flow oil filter like UltraFilter which flows much better than a conventional full flow filter and will also get you up to pressure on startup much quicker. The filter does cost more in initial purchase, but you can not only clean it ans re-use it but you can look inside to see what it is picking up. The base of the filter can also be changed so that you can use it on your next car, in many cases. The company will send you your next thread adaptor for free. But the important thing is that it helps to get your engine up to pressure much quicker.

LarryL, I was doing a search on the Web the other night and saw Racor makes a cleanable fullflow too. I have alway's like the Racor products......Anyone else use a cleanable fullflow filter? Pro's, Con's????

You know, with a bypass and the cleanable fullflow....this could be the ulitimate setup
