Coach vs RV

We have watched our good friends Neil and Sandy go through several stages of the RV thing. Started with a 28 footer fifth wheel. Very nice. Then went to a 33 footer. Also very nice with slide outs and everything. Very luxurious.

Then they bought a coach. Then a bigger one. Then an even bigger one. If there's one thing I like about the RV thing it's the separate truck and trailer. That way you drop the trailer and you still have a nice truck to drive around in. With a coach you have major driving challenges. Plus it always seems to be in the shop for something. Reminds me of owning a large boat.

I'm stuck at the 33 foot fifth wheel. Tows like a dream behind my 2500HD and has slide outs and everything my wife needs to feel comfortable.

I've been kicking the idea around about getting a RV. I weighed the options of mileage between the A,B, and C types. The class b will give the best mileage, but they are the smallest. Diesels get the best mileage but you pay for that luxury. Class A and C get almost the same mileage and can be close in price. So the big question is, where will I store this thing when I'm not using it. And how often will I really use it in a years time, to justify the cost?. If you have acres of land and don't mind seeing it sitting there all the time, I guess that won't matter. They can be pricey but the do look like fun.,,

I'd have to agree with You. I have owned many RVs over the years and a 5th wheel is the way to go IMHO.

If you have a truck, go with the fifth wheel or trailer. Just realize a half ton pu isn't a serious tow vehicle. I got a motor coach and tow a small car.

Consider too whether you'll go one place and stay, or move from place to place. The more you move the more mpg matters.

After looking around at a RV show this winter,I think going the 5th wheel route would be cost prohibitive for me.The Pickup needed would be almost as much as the 5th wheel, plus there's no benefit fuel wise. Then there's the double registration and insurance costs, as well as the ever present maintenance costs.,,

In our case the cost of a new truck + travel trailer < Motorhome of similar size + daily driver car/truck. Realize that you can pay anywhere on the cost spectrum for both routes. Duelly diesel loaded truck + higher end 5th wheel is very different than base level gas HD truck + reasonable size/cost travel trailer.

Anybody home.

I am asking about a bus like touring music bands ride in with the rear engine versus the winnebago type family traveller.

With a fuel guzzling, but awesome sounding Detroit two-stroke diesel? Do yourself a favor and avoid ann old motor coach such as that at all cost.

I'm a semi mechanic at UPS, I know that.
I was assuming the OP might want one of those old motor coaches that pop up from time to time on craigslist.
Most likely a wrong assumption.

Real motor coaches are heavy duty vehicles meant to pound out the miles for traveling professionals.
The diesel pusher meant for the vacationer is a lighter duty vehicle not designed for a million mile lifespan.

No motorhome is anything but a poorly-built box with a bunch of junk loosely fastened inside. Unless you get into converted highway coaches, they are ALL junk, no exceptions. They are built with quality that would have the builders of Yugos, Ladas, and Trabants hanging their heads in shame.

Some owners of the million plus dollars "Class A" motor coaches would disagree with your ignorant statement.

Not the honest ones.

Motorcoach I'm guessing with fall under Class A DP's.. 2 or more subclasses under each of the above. Class C and Super C, Class B RV or Van style, Class A DP's or gassers, probably more I didn't get much sleep last night. Our Class C works for us sense I don't have any use for a truck otherwise. May eventually get a tow dolly for just rent. I can setup in 1/4 of the time takes most trailers, it is fun to watch them at least.

I would agree that MOST might be. But there are tremendous variations in quality, and some of the mfgrs put out a slick and well assembled product. Get out to a show and duck under a bumper and look. You'll see a lot of junk, but then you'll see the variations....

Ive had some real junk.

This unit Im sitting on now is little gem.

(had to throw in a drained sump pict- 25Qt.)
