Clear Washer Fluid

I seen Rain-X Windshield Wash "additive" at walmart. I'm curious of what it contains (haven't gotten around to pulling an MSDS Sheet yet...); whether it contains just concentrated methanol, or if it contains "cleaning agents" too.... BUT, on the bottle it does say it can be added to plain water (I'd recommend "distilled" water...since distilled water contains no impurities/iron/etc....), and for a lower freeze point the bottle says to "add more than recommended" lol.

I don't have the bottle in front of me....but walmart sells it; by the wipers and washer fluid....they always have it in stock...kinda curious what it's all about, since we got the blue PEAK stuff, the green Prestone Bug Wash stuff, a Rain-X Bug Cleaner, and then a green PEAK Bug Cleaner + RainOff....wonder why the additive don't sell But it must have some use, otherwise Rain-X wouldn't have created it? lol.


In the summer months I use a mix of 25% Vinegar and water....mix it up in a gallon jug and have seen no adverse affects...oopps.

My latest concoction is 2-butoxyethanol and water. 1 oz of LA's Totally Awesome, per 120 oz. (8 oz. less than a gallon), and it seems to work good. But obviously, won't work too well up north in the freezing cold.


But check that Rain-X additive, it's in a yellow plastic bottle with a fold down spout with neat measurements on the side so you know how much you are adding. It looks "clear" to me.

This is what 2 oz. or 1/4 cup of bleach did to a gallon I checked it 20 hrs after I added it. I think 1 oz. will do the same. The pictures suck. I have too much time on my hands. [img:center]

I've been using it for years. It coats windshield with water repelling coating. Water droplets tend to bead up and get blown away; sometimes I do not turn wipers on at all. I can see the difference between treated and un-treated washer fluid.
It does leave white residue on the hood by the nozzles.

2 cents worth of bleach cleared this gallon up. 1 single penny's worth of bleach will probably do the same.

Add 1oz to 128oz/1 gal. WW fluid common laundry bleach and it will clear up & look like water without altering the freezing point specified any amount to cause concern.

How will paint and clear coat react to bleach, if at all?

Vinegar is acid, I find it hard to believe that it will not eventually damage the finish. It might be OK on the glass, but you're going to have a stream of it running off your car somewhere, over and over.

I'm dumping that jug I added 2 oz of bleach in my beautiful Cadillac without reservation.
