Cleaning and Adjusting Rear Drum Brakes

The self-adjusters on the brakes never work as well as a manual adjustment.

I take the wheels off twice a year (installing and removing winter tires) and I manually adjust the brakes then. It takes between three and four clicks of the adjuster to get the shoes right up against the drum without actual contact when moving. The e-brake pedal is noticeably firmer after this manual adjust.

I also crack the bleeder valves open whenever I have the wheels off to ensure they don't seize up. This way I am confident I will never have a seized bleeder on my truck.
