Clausing Lathes made a model with a variable speed belt drive that is operated by a hydraulic contol. They furnished hydraulic fluid under their own part #9088. We have an original can, now empty, and need to find a suitable replacement. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks much for responding! It is a 12" Model 5900. We also have a 13" all-gear drive Clausing. Do you happen to have a reference to the proper oils for the headstock, gear box, and apron? Once again, the manual calls for oils by Clausing part numbers.

Yes ask these lathe questions on http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net

I use ISO 46 for my Clausing 4912 for the headstock, gears, everything down to the ways. I'm not sure on the 5900, however the forum I posted will be very helpful, just post in the general section. You can also use google advanced search and search either forum listed by me or tom I'm positive it's been asked more than once, however both sites search engines leave a lot to be desired in my opinion.

I had one of these that my father restored. I believe he used a lube called Mobil "Vactra 1".

You can also look at rec.crafts.metalworking. I think there is a clausing sub-forum there. If you don't have any luck, PM me and I'll email my father for more information.

Though he moved up in the world to a Monarch lathe, he has a ton of knowledge to pass along.

BTW: Is yours anything like this one? (Now sold)

It may have used Vactra in the gear box but Vactra is spec'd as way lube.

Probably right, I can't remember if the way lube was different than the gear box.

wild [censored] guess headstock use a ISO 68 hydrualic oil most all the old >30 year old laths used light AW or plain R&O oils

apron try the same as way lube a Iso 68 WAY LUBE would be fine in both, headstock stick with a ISO 46 or 68 hydrualic oil only waylubes normally have a sticky or non drip nature and will foam if used in a gear box
