Just bought a 2010 Civic Si sedan, and i'm already thinking about syntectic oil. So i'm wondering, how long should I wait befor making the swith? Also what would be the best syntectic for the Si, it is a hight reving motor, plus I live in Canada, and winter can get very cold.
Thanks!

I think Honda puts in an oil specifically for the break in period. I wouldn't change it.

Since you're under warranty, FOLLOW what they say. They will find any way possible to void the warranty by doing things on your own. That doesn't mean you can't change your own oil, just keep records and ONLY use oil to factory specs. Once the warranty runs out, use whatever you want.

Does the manual specify a break-in period? If so, I'd wait until the end of that. Otherwise, you can probably start right after the first oil change.

I've read on the Civic forums that Honda's factory fill has a good amount of moly.Honda recommends a 5K mile mile.
On my son's '08 Civic,we changed the factory fill at 3500 and went with Amsoil and a eao13 filter.

I'd run it to the end of the OCI (keeping in mind that Honda wants you to do so), and then change. If you're really buggy about break-in crud (I doubt there's much in a Honda engine, cleanly machined in the first place, and why on earth would they tell you to keep it in if it were a danger) you might just do an early filter-only change.

Anyway, IIRC the Si engine is, unlike most of the Honda family, still a 30wt engine. That being the case, I'd think that GC would be the cat's meow for this application.

2001SE, firstly welcome to BITOG!

Is your car made at the Allison plant in Ontario?
IF so it likely comes with the Idemitsu made Honda brand 0W-20 which is an excellent syn' oil with a VI over 200 and it contains a boat load of moly. Honda engines are known to be easy on oil, nevertheless I'd stick with Honda brand 0W-20 oil. Here in Ontario it's priced at about $7.60/L although a deal can usually be had if you buy a case of 12.
A second oil choice would be Toyota's 0W-20 which has a very similar formulation and it is cheaper at about $5.65/L. The fact that it is the cheapest 0W-20 oil in Canada is just a bonus.

I think Honda recommends a 30 weight oil for the Si, and a 20 weight for all other Civics. I doubt they use the same factory fill as the other Civic models.
