Can anyone tell me what are the improvements of CI-4 Plus oil over the CI-4? Is it better solvency and ability to hold more insolubles in suspension?
Would they require better base oils like group II or II+ ?
I plan to continue to use HDEO in my Saab 2.3 (non turbo) would I see any benefits of CI-4 Plus?

When the low emission diesel engines came out in 2002 with exhaust gas recirculation ('most every truck engine except Cat), the CI-4 oil was not able to keep the extra soot from agglomerating. CI-4plus does a better job of keeping the soot in particles too small to be abrasive.

For your Saab, I'd prefer a gasoline engine 5W-40 over a diesel 5W-40. Even though the diesel oil is rated SL, it still has higher sulfated ash that may shorten the life of your catalytic converter.

Do these CI-4 Plus oils have more or less of a good thing in the additive package? I believe that putting emission controls on a diesel in the first place is just asking for problems.

By design, diesels are dirty engines, but the advantages, at least to me, outwiegh this inherent problem, in torque and power vs engine size and economy. The only drawbacks are more frequent fluid and filter changes (not sayning that you can't get away with an extended OCI, but I just wouldn't chance a super long one, due to the nature of the beast so to speak), and of course, diesel seems to always cost more than gas no matter what time of the year.

Long live diesels and hybrids!!!
