Choppy Load Speed - Web Sites

So I've been struggling with a problem the last couple weeks and was hoping someone could help, since I'm out of ideas.

Certain web sites load slowly, or don't load at all. Hotmail and ebay are two examples. I use Chrome, but tried them in explorer and had the same issue. It seems like sites that require a login move slower (or just fail to load), but not 100% of the time (BITOG works fine). I can load other websites at the same time in a different tab, and they open at normal speeds.

When I do a speedtest, I'm always in the range of 7MB down and 1 MB up. I'm running Win 7, with security essentials, a Motorolla SBG 9000 cable/wireless modem. I've done a scan with MSE and Malwarebytes, nothing found.

My wireless is WPA encrypted, and limited to MAC addresses. So I'm relatively confident I don't have "guests" slowing me down.

A friend suggested reinstalling Chrome because maybe the profile was screwed up. I did, no improvement. IE wasn't installed when this started, but it is now and is doing the same thing.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or further areas to look? I'm really getting frustrated with this! Thanks!

When troubleshooting connection issues, the #1 thing to try is to simplify the system. Go wired instead of wireless. Disconnect everything else, turn off wireless completely, reboot your DSL or cable modem, reboot your computer & run whatever virus/malware program you have. Also try it with a different OS computer (linux, OS X, Windows XP or 7) to see if you can duplicate the issue.

Did you clear your cache?

How can IE not be installed when this started?

I would download a live linux CD like Knoppix or Ubuntu and run a browser session off the CD; try the identical web sites with the supplied Firefox. This will determine if it is the hardware (NIC etc) or the software(W7)

Since you are only having problems with pages with logins, the problem might be with the encryption libraries under w7 Trying the same sites with a different temporary OS will help isolate the issue, by eliminating the use of those libraries.

Try dropping your MTU down. It is likely at 1500, try 1472.

Hey guys - thanks for all the suggestions!

I started working through them, rebooting the router seemed to do the trick. Everything works fine now. I'm not sure what was going on, but I'm hopeful the fix holds.

If rebooting it fixed it, it may have buggy firmware. That being said, I couldn't find any from Motorolla for it doing a quick search....

The thing is getting somewhat old, so I guess if it keeps doing it I may be in the market for a new one. On the bright side of things, I now know what to do when it happens again.

I looked for firmware too, no dice.
