I am overwhelmed by the amount of information on this forum, before I arrived here I didn’t have a clue about the complexities of choosing the correct oil for my car; and now I just know how much I have to learn! I would dearly like some suggestions for the best oil for the following spec:

Renault Clio 182 with 750 miles on the clock.

I drive 50-75 miles per day in 2 journeys of equal length, although I have been driving conservatively so far I will probably drive quite hard once the engine is settled and I am used to it.

I live on the south coast of the UK where temperatures range from 25-90F (-5 to 30C)

The manual recommends ELF EVOLUTION SXR 5W-40

I am planning to do the first oil change today with the 5W-40 Semi Synthetic that they use at my local garage and then fill it with 'good stuff' at 1500.

Any comments or suggestions are gratefully received.

I looked at the Castrol UK website and their oil selector is not very up to date on the Renault models.

Can you actually get the Elf oils locally?

Thanks for the welcome haley.

I dont have any reason not to use the ELF oil as suggested by Renault but i've read that the suggested oil is not always best for a particular situation. Also the majority of threads ive read suggest using M1.

I will probably get the dealership to fill it up with ELF as i dont have the space or the tools to do it myself

I'm sure i could find some locally if i tried.

The Castrol site suggests Magnetec 10W40 for my engine but also notes that Renault reccomend ELF.

I think i'll stick with ELF

Flak,

Yes, indeed, stick with the Elves...er...I mean...ELF! And use specifically what Renault recommends, i.e., EVOLUTION SXR 5W-40.

ELF SXR 5W40 is a good oil so is Motul 5W40, Mobil 5W50,and Esso's 5W40 and 0W40 are all good oils! I think price and availablity are going to be the only real difference as all of them are synthetic and do a fine job. In the end the only way to know for sure is to test them after your oil change interval is over.
