Cholesterol Lowering Drugs May Be Harmful

Most doctors are not research doctors and do not stay on top of the all the studies out there. They basically go off of what they learned in school and during their internships and what they pick up in practice, so listening to your doctor's advice is likely hearing what the thinking was 20 years ago when they were in medical school. Plus, there is a ton of money in the system trying to convince everyone must be on drugs. Hint--if you are signing your check at the doctor's office on a blotter that advertises a drug, and there is a poster in the examination room on the wall, and your doctor has a pocket protector from the company be very wary of accepting a prescription for that drug! It's like going into a Goodyear store for your car and asking for an unbiased opinion on tires--you're not going to get it.

Statins are generic now so the money is going to the generic companies, not the ones on the poster. The rules have changed and cut way back on what pharma companies can give out as gifts to health care providers.

Of course, eating right and getting exercise is the best way to get and keep health.

If you won't do that, then a pill is your best option.

When you hear the lists of possible side effects, I'd think people would head to the gym or out for a walk, and put a few more vegetables and a few less cheeseburgers and cokes on the table.

But most don't.

Merkava, that link is a Paleo link.
The Paleo/low carb community are basically scientific revisionists. They have guys running around with 400 total cholesterol proclaiming that it is no problem because they have the "big fluffy" kind. Okay. Subscribe at your own risk.

Statins cut risk. They also have side effects. You weigh the costs against the benefits. There is nothing that has zero cost, including "natural" methods of reducing cholesterol.

I'm not looking for any specific evidence whether it be good or bad. I'm looking for advice from members of this board including you. I have no agenda other than finding the truth.

so this is not really a debate or a friendly discussion. ask a doctor for medical advice, never ask the internet or a forum.

The doctor's advice is heavily influenced by Big Pharma. I feel like I can get good quality unbiassed advice right here. The members of this board here at BITOG are some of the most intelligent people in the world.

Ok, tell that to your doctor and you will be shown the door. Buy a book on DIY woodsman medical stuff and good luck with life.

Then get a different doctor.

I was put on BP meds, Benecar HCT. I took 40/12.5

I'm down to just 10mg/day and no diuretic.

I told him I want to get off the drugs by exercising, and eating right. He said ok and helped me with that.

Your doctor, like many other professionals is working for you. If he isn't, find another.

Don't just throw out blanket, "he's influenced by Big Pharma." Some may, some may not. If you want to get off the drugs, big pharma sending the busty blonde drug rep to wink and blink and provide some samples isn't going to change what you can do.

Exactly javacontour. My doctor never recommends drugs to me because I basically do what I need to do with food and exercise. A good doctor customizes the advice for the patient.

You get someone who is 100lb overweight, eating KFC everyday, and exercising by pressing the tv remote, then welcome to statin land.

If you don't approve of that source then great. I'm looking for interpretation of the sources and you gave your opinion without reservation. Thank you Sir.

I'm not taking advice from YouTube. I posted that video link and all the subsequent links so people like you, my Oil Buddies, can interpret that information and advise me on what action to take. I place way more value on the advice I get from this board than than I do from YouTube or the doctors. And just in case somebody thinks I'm kidding around, I'm not; I'm serious.

It's a pretty sad day if you listen to Medical advice on an oil forum.....really sad.

As I said earlier..right away you are looking for objective advice but you are quivck jto bring out evil "Big Pharma"

As pointed out Docs make little if any money money on drugs, but if you believe this they make zero on Statins..they are no generic and actually free of $3/month. You need to go to a satellite Dr's office of a major University hospital. You will get the latest and best information. Or..conversely you can go on line and watch youtube.

Readers Digest: Get a better doc.

Not sad to me at all. I get all kinds of excellent advice here on BITOG and I'm quite happy with it.

Banned Catalyst Show from Australia
60k people quit taking statins right after this show was run, which is another pole of insanity - some of them needed the medicine. OTOH, Big Pharma is a factor for sure. How can I trust a doctor, when in 1930 they claimed smoking Camel is better for you?

Bad side effects of statins have been known for years.
Last year I had to stop taking them as they were causing muscle pain to the extent that I was having trouble walking.
There are other side effects.
You have to balance the good and bad and make your choice.
Alternatives to statins exist.Niacin,Red Yeast Rice,Garlic all have some effect on cholesterol levels. You just have to do some research.

These cholesterol drugs play a trick on your body. They irritate your liver. If you're a bit overweight, have less than excellent nutrition and don't get much exercise this is the last thing you need and the very reason your doctor will prescribe one of these drugs. It's an accepted combination like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or popcorn, butter and salt at the movies.

For the healthcare industry they are a good return on investment. The pills cost pennies and sell for dollars. They reduce numbers without having to have clue one about the cause or any idea what "normal" might be for the individual. They allow for quick turn around on office visits. The lab tests are dirt cheap and still sell for a premium. So, what's not to like.

And by the way, the doctor does not have to tell the patient to do anything that would upset them so that the patient has a good experience during the office visit.

Elevated LDL cholesterol plays a significant role in heart disease risk. There are several different ways to reduce it including:

1. Having a normal BMI (lose weight if you are overweight).
2. Eat less saturated fat.
3. Exercise more.
4. Have a normal functioning thyroid.
5. Reduce stress.
6. Reduce excess iron in the body by giving blood or drinking green tea and eating whole grains.

If you are unwilling to do the above (and many people are), it's better to take statins than be a ticking time bomb. Yes, there might be horrible side effects but being unhealthy doesn't offer many pleasant alternatives.
