Old Town, I don't have any need for generator but at that price it's tempting just because

I think you are overdue an oil change. My experiance with Chinese machinery is that even if it's well made, it's usually not as clean inside as it should be.

You should do a couple of real short interval oil changes before you switch to syn. to be sure all the manufacturing swarf and floor sweepings are out of the engine.

Slick17601,

Not to sound like a generator salesman; If you are looking for a stand-by generator, two of the best deals on the internet are at Amazon.com. They are 7000 watt, run on propane or natural gas and are made by Briggs & Stratton power products. They have larger sizes too. My concern was running a portable generator in the rain (these are rain tight) and fuel supply after a disaster. It's a nice little "stealth" generator- it looks like an air conditioner (your neighbors will never know you have one- unless it's running).

Option 1 (Manual Start): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSS534/
$1,599.

Option 2 (Automatic Start): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSOH18/
$1,999.

You get Free shipping & Free lift gate delivery. If you use their A9.com web search engine for a few weeks you receive an additional discount of $25. (or more). If you sign up for the Amazon.com credit card, you receive an additional $30.00 off instantly. Also, with their credit card, you would receive a $50.00 "reward certificate" in the mail for such a large purchase. Too good of a deal to pass up.

The only negative thing is they are quick movers and are sometimes out of stock. They also do not ship within 24 hours. They usually take about 3 weeks to get when in stock.

Is this from personal experience? I agree that $249 is grossly inexpensive compared to a Honda. If it lasts a quarter as long as a Honda I will be thrilled!!! It only cost $249.00 USD. I use generators for powering tools, I do not run them for long intervals so maybe it will last a while.

Check out these ugly waveforms and you'll see why it's inexpensive.

Ick, I'd take the cheap non-invertor generators over the invertor generator. I wonder what my Onan 3k watt generator looks like on a sine generator, it's not a cheap generator and has no problems starting and running a refrigerator/freezer and a freezer at the same time and then my attic fan 10 seconds later followed by the central ventilation fan of the furnace of the house another 10 seconds later and power a TV some lights and a coffee maker and toaster at the same time without having a fit. Never hurt any appliances and it seems it can run pretty much everything in the house although ideally not at the same time but as needed, except for the A/C or any non-120 volt piece by switching circuits from line power to generator power through our circuit transfer switch in the basement.

I recently bought a 3500 KW chinese generator from Pep Boys. It starts on the first pull and the manual calls for 10w30. I am using delo 10w30 and will change after the first 5-10 hrs.

Well,
I am still very happy with my Chinese generator. I used it for powering tools on a month long project and it worked like a champ. As suggested here , I am changing the oil every 10-12 hours. I have been using Castrol Syntec 10w-40 and it seems to be holding up quite well in the Texas heat. By the way, in our fleet we have Yamaha, Honda and Onan units. Is the Chinese Pep Boys Unit as good? Probably not. but for the price I think the Chinese sets are a real bargain.

Well, it happened. I found a problem with my Chinese generator. This morning it developed a fuel leak. Upon inspection, I noticed that the pitcock assembley was loose. I turned it 1/4 of a turn and the leak stopped.

So there, I have found a problem with it.
