Saw a video of this on twitter/X and thought it was a bit wild. It seems the Chinese are trying to get around the problem of lithium battery fires by ejecting the batteries.

I think the risks of something like this are pretty obvious:
- It could set fire to something far more dangerous than the EV it was situated under
- It could smoke somebody in the legs, seriously injuring them
- It could take out a baby stroller
- It could launch the battery into a building, market, outdoor restaurant seating

Plus many more.

interesting way of dealing with the battery fires but like the op said , what other can of worms are you opening up ?

I like the concept—its the execution that is key. Perhaps end state, the owner hads the key fob to responding fire personnel, who first line up some conveyor, ready to receive, then enters the special eject code. Thing is, by the time the FD gets there, its probably well cooked.

But have to start somewhere. Hopefully this particular idea doesn’t get tried in its current form.

How many hours a day would such car be "supervised" by a driver? Do such fires happen only when car is occupied? I'd think chances of car catching on fire are higher while not occupied, so battery gets ejected when car is parked and unattended?

I cannot think of a better example of the "Law of Unintended Consequences".

- Chinese Engineer: "Here's our idea of how to solve a problem."
- American Lawyer: "Here's the 17 ways I see an opportunity to sue you into oblivion."
- American Jury: "Hold my beer!" (see the other thread about the Michelin LTX tire suit resulting in a $220M award)

It's an idea, but likely not possible without adding a lot of weight in a car that the battery is a structural component like a Tesla to reinforce the body without the battery.

Seems a bit overkill.
