I currently don't have a chimney cap. I have seen the HDepot metal version and also the bricks with a slab of paver/rock/stone...Edit-Sorry...blue stone that's it. We are close to the water and get a pretty good wind. I notice some of the metal caps get blown off.

Any thoughts?

I've had a metal cap up there for over 20 years. We had a big storm a few years back... micro burst or something. It knocked some brick chimneys a block from me clear down, including a big church with those big spires. I remember seeing things flying around in the air before I went to the basement.

I guess partly it is about exactly where the most intense winds are, but my has certainly endured some pretty high straight winds and it is still there.

I had a chimney cap that had springs on "fingers" that inserted into the chimney. You can imagine how well that worked. After it came off, I cut the springs off and was able to rotate the fingers to the outside of the chimney flue. Then I took a piece of stainless steel perf strap, wrapped that around the exposed flue pipe & fingers and secured it with a bolt. Sort of like a giant hose clamp. It hasn't come off since.
