Childlike food expressions that should be cancelled immediately

I live in south Louisiana . If you get offended when people mangle the English language this ain't the place for you .
Wife had to tell me that a week ago she was at an after school "play" and she was selling concessions and she had to struggle a bit at first until she figured out what many of these kids and even some young adults were asking for. Pocorns! A bag o Pocorns! She finally caught on that is the new Pop corn they were asking for! Ugh. We are going backwards in our english language etc.....

My beloved Scottish grandfather sailed over in a boat as a boy around 1910 or so. Rest of my family is German or Hillbilly.

Anyway he used to eat brown beans on toast. Except I can not find the proper brown beans here. No idea where he got them, I think they were Heinz.

Only English meal I would like. Sorry, no disrespect intended.

There's an old joke where in Heaven the cooks are Italian, the policemen are English, the mechanics are German, the lovers are French and the bankers are Swiss - whereas in Hell the cooks are English, the policemen are German, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss and the bankers are Italian.
Check out the canned food section in one of those "World Market" stores. I walk around in those sometimes with the wife and notice they have lots of foods from around the world and I do see lots of Heinz canned food items one can not find in regular grocery stores. We as young guys used to frequent a bar that served some different fast type of snacks and one of them was chunks of cheeses with a little cup of steak sauce for dipping. Pretty good snack when drinking some good old frosty mug ale.

Or how about the fact everyone's car has "door cards" all of a sudden. Did we turn British overnight? They were always door panels or door trim panels until Wheeler Dealers hit the airwaves.
“Door cards” not good? Look at them. They are literally cardboard!

It’s amazing when I look back how sheltered I was growing up. I ate Asian noodles with the secret oil packs at age 18 (college dorm, other students). Pesto at 22. I flew out to LA by myself at 21 and upon landing? Found a convenience store where they sold Marlboro as singles. So I got that, a 40 Oz, and cracklins which were to me pork
Rinds with skin attached. Never seen such a thing and it was unbelievably good in my young eyes. The part where LAPD said, “You guys in the car put your hands where we can see them!” came later in the story.

When my oldest daughter was about 15, she had one of her friends over for dinner. I made Chicken Parmesan. Her friend had never had it before and called it 'cheese chicken'.

My wife introduced me to beans on toast. After trying several brands, we settled on Van Camp's (pork & beans) with grated cheddar sprinkled in.

I used to cook lots of white beans (really called Navy peas) in crock pot with chunks of smoked ham. Actually over cooked them and they were just amazing with that smoke flavor. Dont cook much at all anymore since we are "empty nest" just wife and I for many years now. I do really like the plain Campbells pork n beans as they have a real good sauce they cook them in. Of course wife says "they are so full of sugar no wonder you like them!"

A "sammich" is NOT just a sandwich.
It has a cultural pedigree that predates all the others listed.
I won't elaborate, lest my post gets deemed political.
Do some Googling if you're curious.

My sister called it “Sketties”. instead of spaghetti but she was 2 so it was cute.
^That's quite amusing, everyone knows it's proper name is 'ghetti'..;D

And to the list my contribution is 'puter when talking about a computer. My wife HATES that pronunciation - especially her being a court reporter, haha. Perhaps other married BITOG members would enjoying adding it to their vocabulary..?

how about childlike food expressions that are ok....."jimmies." That's what they were called when I was growing up. My son calls them sprinkles.

They are all sauces. Gravy is a sauce that is made with meat juices.
Yes, we know cuisine-strictly speaking, it is. But you didn’t call it a sauce, it was gravy. Just like you didn’t back talk grandma either.

6. Chicki parm- it's chicken Parmesan

Wait you guys think it’s chicken parmesan? Down here we call it chicken parmigiana and then argue about if it’s shortened to the childish sounding chicken parmi, or the marginally less childish chicken parma.

How pretentious. It's not an Italian dish and chicken is an English word. Now we have an inauthentic dish with a hodgepodge name that gives it a fake Italian flair. :p
