POLICE plucked a child from the home of a Brisbane pedophile and rescued seven others as part of a series of internet pornography raids that has led to at least 191 people being charged.
Distraught families were told of the extraordinary busts that netted a childcare centre owner, teachers, doctors, government officials and police.
During a raid in Queensland, police discovered the child in the sexually explicit material living in the home of the offender. The seven others were rescued from a pedophile who preyed on the children as young as five without their parents knowledge.
As revealed in The Australian yesterday state and federal police yesterday issued about 400 search warrants at the homes of men believed to have downloaded child porn images from a website run by Russian organised crime. Police have laid 2000 charges, seized 380 computers and identified more than 2million images.
Charges include accessing and downloading child pornography to rape, sexual assault and child sex tourism offences.
In one instance there were pictures of an abused two-year-old in a bondage scene.
In Melbourne, the licensee of three childcare centres -- who had weekly contact with four-year-old children in Indonesian classes -- was among 26 people charged in Melbourne yesterday. Scott Thompson, who is a director of private childcare centres in Ivanhoe and Lysterfield in suburban Melbourne, has been charged with possessing 1000 computer images of child pornography.
A tearful Karen Zanetty, who arrived at the Ivanhoe centre to pick up her five-year-old son, said she was "shocked and disturbed" by the day's events.
"This is a terrible, terrible shock," Ms Zanetty said.
"You pay so much money for these places and you trust that your child will be safe," she said, breaking down in tears.
