last night I changed the ATF, removed the old filter, etc. realized this morning that I forgot to install the new filter! DOH!!!! and the pan is "RTV'd" on! guess what I'll be doing this morning.....

My OCD would get the best of me, and I'd be dropping the pan this morning. Consider it a flush of sorts.

oh, I REMOVED the old filter.... just forgot to replace it with the new one!!! GRRRRR!!!! and the stupid pan is "glued" on. why cant everyone use a spin on AT filter like the older saturns???

Bummer! While you have the pan back off I would try to install a pan drain plug. NAPA has them as well as others. Then only change the filter every third fluid change.

I had a friend do something similar years ago, except he did not forget, he just did not know any better. He had changed the transmission fluid and filter on a Ford Explorer. A day or two later he called me to say that the transmission was slipping and sometimes would not engage at all. I began to question him about his methods and asked him about the o-ring that seals the filter to the transmission. He said that he saw it in the package, but did not see where it went so he did not use it.

Fortunately, he was able to drop the pan and reinstall the filter WITH the o-ring this time, then put it all back together and the unit seemed to work fine again. He was using Amsoil ATF, so he caught the fluid and put it back in since it was a bit pricey and he did not have any more of it.

Why are all the manufactures going to that RTV, why dont they put a drain plug on them and a spin on filter. I have a Dodge and it is a literally pain the arse to change it. At least they could put one of those re-usable torque limiter gaskets on it. The RTV is a stupid idea for something that requires regular maintence.

No question that the Ivory Tower crowd is trying to make it very difficult or impossible to service your own car. That is NO accident.

Its a 2006 Dodge 2500 4wd, both front and rear ends have a re-usable torque limiteer gasket, but the Transmission pan has gasket sealant, it took me three times to drop the pan and seal it up. I kept getting a small seap in the back, I would put a aftermarket pan on it, but it has the cross over pipe running right under the pan and I would have to re-route the exhaust to get the bigger pan with a gasket and a drain plug. It just sucks, I noticed the bell housing, transfer case everything under there is rtv sealant, not a very smart idea, that stuff is good, but I would guess it would become brittle and crack after about 10 years.
