Chevy Caprice

I've seen them in El Cerrito, Walnut Creek and Danville around my neck of the woods. I have a feeling Oakland PD will get the Taurus PI.

The Commodore is the "standard" wheelbase family car in Oz, and is what the SS is supposed to be. Highway patrol are mostly SS Commodores and XR-8 Ford Falcons.

Here, the Caprice is part of the Statesman range, which has extended wheelbase for more rear legroom. Caprice has the higher luxury level, and the Caddy style wreath emblem.

(Got me a 1997 Caprice, L67, leather lounge to drive to work in...bloke paid $67k in 1997, I got it for $9,300 in 2012, with less than 63,000 miles).

If they (Holden) sold an optioned down Statesman in Oz (LWB, more rear room, and no need for leather and such), they would sell heaps of them

Yeah, I am seeing some Tahoe's too. Very sinister looking!

Come to think of it, I may have seen a couple of Charger's too.

Off Topic:
My nephew is a U.S. Boarder Patrol Officer in So.Cal and drives a Charger Hemi. They often have to take the vehicles up to 120 + mph to chase down a vehicle on the run.

He told me recently that they were chasing a modified Mitsubishi Eclips Turbo at ~130 mph and this Eclips was just walking away. So they gave up the chase as it was getting too dangerous in the pitch black night out in the desert.

He said to me, "Uncle, I don't know what this thing had in it but, it wasn't worth killing ourselves over!"

"The faster we went, the faster the Eclips went, and then it was just toooooo Fast"

cant really say i'm excited when these start appearing at auctions or surplus government sites, still not the same as the beloved 9C1 sperm pod.

First I saw one, then another. Now, I am seeing them all over! I am probably seeing them as they are being prepaired for the road, with all of the equipment that police cars have.

But, I haven't seen them on our Chevrolet Dealer Lots(that I've noticed)

How about you town?

Town of Greece? We live in Gates and I saw a Greece PD Caprice a couple weeks ago. Most of what I see around here (except for State troopers) are Impalas.

When I was down in Beaufort, S.C. for my son's graduation from boot camp at Parris Island, the local Chebbie dealer had an unmarked 'detective's special' Caprice sitting right on the front of the lot facing the road.

I'm guessing it was to gin up attention/desire with the local gendarmes and the municipality's equipment buyers.

Good luck with the coolant pumps on those. They fail almost annually and are $$$ to buy. Done quite a few of those on friends' '07+ V8 Caprices.

How often are the coolant pumps an issue on L98 powered WM's Down Under?

btw, Ford INSISTS it isnt a Taurus Police Package. They get really upset; its a Interceptor Sedan. Same thing with the Interceptor Utility. Its NOT an Explorer Police Package.
I thought that was giggle worthy.

So it wasn't a Crown Vic P71 package ... it was a "Ford P71"? Gotta love the silly naming schemes

No, it was called the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. It is silly.
I think it may be from the last time around it was a Taurus Police package and it flopped so hard it caused earthquakes. I think the only place Ive ever seen them was in Robocop (though I dont know if they were actually police packages or regular Tauri. Likely the latter, but the inference was there.)

Well, if you take an unreliable platform and turn it into a severe service duty ... 3.8s blow headgaskets and the AX4S transmissions were far from reliable.

I'm still not sure how the transaxle and AWD system are going to hold up on the police package.

FYI the Taurus used for current police duty is completely unrelated to the old Tauri. They are pretty much reskinned Ford Five Hundred's.

Shannow and others from the Land Down under? Are the Caprice cars you own have the 6.0L LS V8 with 380 HP? If not, what engine is in it? What MPG do you get? How reliable are they? What are the problems you are having with the car?

Regards the Caprice version they are exporting here to the US.

Are these reliable cars? IF different from the above car: What MPG and what problems do owners have?

Hilariously true! What a dog.

And many are still wary, plus the AWD setup on the Taurii is not yet proven in the rear world.

Another note is the crushing weight in the Taurus platform, a loaded SHO weighs over 4300 pounds! This does little for dynamics or longevity...
