Bigger shock to my system than the Armstrong scandal is the revelations coming out in Australia of the team that I grew up barracking for cheating their guts out in recent years...players being taken into rooms and injected, pumped full of junk etc.

And standing proud and saying that it was all legal,so all OK.

Since when is injections with calves' blood a normal sporting practice ?

Cheats know when they are cheating, which is why they resort to the strict letters of the rules as their defence.

Seems there may have been some other reason for the relative over achieving of Australia in sport.

Wonder if this includes cricket?

In the US our society has seemingly lionized cheating. It's not the hardest-working who gets ahead, it's the person who can game the system the best. For those who manage to make lots of digits after the dollar sign on their computer screen, they can use those digits to bend the rules to ensure they get even more digits behind the dollar sign. I know plenty of hard-working honest folks who are poor, along with some who are financially successful yet make me wash my hands after interacting with them.

I read somewhere that being a sociopath was considered a valuable skill at some financial services companies. Not sure if it's true, but it wouldn't shock me.

I have found that only a small percentage of people game the system by cheating. I would guess it is about 2-3%. I have also discovered that the wealthiest and most successful people I know who are worth tens of millions of dollars are very smart, very hard working and extremely honest.

There seems to be a prevalent attitude that it is only wrong if you get caught. And If you can get enough money before you get caught, then you can buy your way out of it.

This trend is likely just beginning, as the generations of the entitled come of age with all their ideas on how to beat the system, and get one over on the next guy.

We've got the Australian Institute of Sport, where we, the taxpayer get to provide for the elite athletes of tomorrow.

An exceptional runner applies to get in, is measured, gaited, lung function tested etc., and told that she's in, only if she changes sports to rowing...sort of defeats the purpose unless it's purely winning IMO.

But when Warney shows up with a banned diuretic, the media explains it away as a diet tablet that his mum slipped him because he was getting chubby etc. Sam Riley had a headache, and her coach accidentally gave her something out of the banned cupboard.

Back in 2000, I was in 12th grade, and had to write a essay about something you felt strongly about. I was racing mountain bikes cross-country in Expert and Cash categories at the time, against older, college age riders,.racers, and if I had Really wanted it, I could have gone far. Also rode and raced on the Road sometimes, but not with passion. AnyWays, my essay was about doping or artificially Improving your performance, and if I would do it or not If I was in that position. Armstrong was just getting going at that time. I didnt ever really like him, untill 4 or 5 years ago, when he just kinda went away.

Lance Armstrong is a criminal who should be extradited to France and be prosecuted for cheating the real winners of all of those races out of their winnings.

Oh my goodness! You are in a dream world!
Listen to athletes who 'spill the beans'. Amphetamines, HGH, steroids, etc were rampant - due to controls and tests, it is down somewhat.
And like Bob Costas said a few years ago, "Just take one look at ball players today!" as his response to if anyone 'juiced'.

What "real" winners? They were as dirty as he was. he was the best juicer in a sport of juicers.

Bob Costas is a fraud. I wouldn't believe a word that idiot says. 2-3% is the real number. The media blows them up way out of proportion.

That is everyone's excuse.

It's not about sustainability. It's about making this quarter look good for the stockholders. Companies are all about Stockholder value, employees be darned.

Same goes for athletes. Their body is only good for so long. They don't know how to speak in public, they have no other skills.
When I was at Baylor University the statistic was that 13% of the Football players graduated. That was WAY above the average. I think OU graduates something around 3% of their football players.

The irony of these multi-million dollar salaried players is that statistically they last less than a decade after retirement before they go dead broke.
Average Football player lasts 5 years before going bankrupt.
Average Basketball player lasts only 8 years.

Pretty funny if you ask me.

I have to work with others that need to be trustworthy due to that trait will affect your income. There have been a few guys who have been cheating the time clock which gains them more pay out of my pocket AND steals from the company, as well. Time and time again it was brought to the attention of managers and discussed in meetings, yet it continued. Finally HR was involved and what happened to them? Nothing. A memo was put out explaining the time clock procedures. One of these guys was demoted due to him not being trustworthy and an a$$ and also stealing money from those he supervised. I'm still out whatever amount of money lost due to this and they keep their jobs with no documentation of any of this!

Other than the memo.

I think we are keeping quiet on this one, instead of shouting about those cheating bloody Aussies...we better make sure our lot weren't in on it too.

Talk about fixing matches, did you see the Sonny Bill Williams/ Botha fight ? What a farce, 10 rounds and the last round 15 secs short, Sonny Bill could hardly stand up. I bet there were more girls watching than guys anyway.

I think I would suspect the All Blacks over the Black Caps, although I would like to hope that never happened with the All Blacks. Their run since the 2001 Tri Nations, or whatever they call it now, was pretty incredible.

It is kinda hard to see how it would help in cricket, but the Aussies have been really above average lately, I would say at least since the Pakistan tour where Australia completely wiped the floor with them in all forms. I remember watching that one ODI that Pakistan should have won, and Australia just was merciless when bowling.

Shannow, I haven't seen anything about St Kilda. Is the media saying about them? Considering they haven't won a Grand Final since before I was born, I can't see them doing it. But I do have to say the Grand Final with them and Collingwood a couple years ago was pretty cool to see, both times.

When the entire industry is full of frauds, the only way to force them to clean up is a boycott until they clean up.

It is not enough to say we'll stop watching Armstrong because he dope, it has to be we'll stop watching the entire Tour de France. Put it in a more American example, we have to stop watching all baseball until Barry Bond and the like cheaters are thrown out.

If the All Blacks were found to be doping it would rock this country to the core, nothing is so sacred to us - it'd be like banning guns in the US, lynch mob material.
