the cost justification is cost of tires compared to your auto insurance policy, to be specific, the collision coverage deductible. If you have comprehensive only....if you get into an accident, it can be a lot more $$$ compared to tires.

Why would I have collision coverage on a 17 year old Camry? I get into an accident, I am out the $1,500 I paid for the car (plus other costs). Find another $1,500 car. Preferably the same one, that way I can recoup some of that cost in the form of parts reuse. The savings being, the age-old gamble: the odds of wrecking a car in any given year, due to a mistake (or negligence) of my own is pretty low. Quite frankly, if I drive the car for a year then wreck it, I'm ahead of the game.

I'm not saying I'm above average driver, but I've managed to go quite a few years without an accident. Winter included.
