Hey all I'm looking to equip our son's Rossi lever gun with some sort of scope. It's not going to get used much and won't be used out past 100yds most likely. I've been surfing Midway and have seen several cheap scopes from a variety of companies, most of which I haven't heard of, like Barska. For the sake of simplicity, I'm thinking that fixed 3x or 4x would be good, am I wrong in thinking this? Will that be too much magnification for close in messing around? I also saw a Simmons 4x 32mm there - I've had Simmons before on a .17HMR that seemed to perform adequately - would that be too much glass for the little Rossi?

I like the Vortex scopes for inexpensive optics. I have had a couple and they hold up and work well. My eyes need a scope at 100 yards and I think 3-4 fixed would work but I usually just get a 3-9. I think a fixed power might look better mounted on a lever action.

I concur on the Vortex rimfire scope...good glass is important....Leupold is better but 2.5x the cost....If target is closer than about 50 yds & you care about accuracy you may like a scope with adjustable objective....maybe read up on .22 rimfire scope parallax.

Nothing wrong with Barska or many of the knockoffs that are available. I have an old Tasco that still performs great after 30 years.
Let him live a little, get a nice 3X9 variable and have fun with it.

most non rimfire scopes are set for 100yards , rimfire usually 50 yards.
adjustable is 15-infinity typically.
You might want to get something with adjustable parallax
Some use side focus knob others are on the objective

PSA has good scope deals usually.
their ammo deals are usually good but shipping brings the deal back to earth some.
would that be too much glass for the little Rossi?

IMO 3-9x is a very common and good scope for rimfire.. You dont have to run it on 9x

I have several Vortex Strike Eagle scopes. They are inexpensive. They are also great glass at that price point.

Wait for a good sale from PSA, I’ve been able to get them at about half of the MSRP.

I’m not recommending the strike Eagle for the Rossi, but I absolutely recommend Vortex

For 22's find something with adjustable parallax. This allows the user to focus both the target and reticle near and far. I purchased a Vortex Diamondback 3-9 x 40 for my 10-22 and it is not up to my standards. As the reticle is NOT in focus when the close up targets are in focus. Sure, it's great out at 200 yards with everything razor sharp. But I don't shoot 22's that far. My 22 shooting range is 25 feet, 50 feet and 75 feet. And an occasional 93 yard maximum in my FL yard. With various spinner targets and plastic pink flamingos.

Go on Ebay and buy a scope made in Japan from the 80's or early 90's. Weaver made some very nice scopes. Far better quality than today's scopes and many times they are less expensive.

I have an inexpensive Bushnell 4x32 on a single shot Daisy .22LR (yep Daisy was in the .22 business many years ago). I have a Bushnell 3-9x32 on my Marlin .22 mag. Both scopes have been surprisingly durable and easy to adjust in the field. Field of view was perfectly adequate for prairie dogs. (FYI both guns and scopes are about 35-40 years old)

With the talk of adjustable parallax glass, I'm kind in an analysis paralysis mode. I'm almost thinking that a dot of some sort would be the better option or his likely uses (0-50yds?)

There is THIS SCOPE that might check all the boxes well enough? I realize that it probably doesn't meet rifle snob snob standards but will it be "good enough" for a first time gun owner?

Bushnell sharpshooter 4-12 AO

50$ with rings included.

its a lighter weight option(18.5oz) since dont like putting 2lb+ of scope and mount on a 5lb rifle.

Features adjustable objective (range focus)

I ordered one for my ruger 10/22 threaded barrel.. it came with a Viridian EON 3-9x40... 100yard parallax scope
they could have at least put the rimfire model scope on it (50 yard parallax)

Its probably gross to @OVERKILL 🤣 with his $$$$ scopes but seems reasonable match to the gun.

I mounted it today. I doubt it would hold up on a big centerfire but not anticipating any issues on a .22lr

Obviously not even close in glass quality to the Arken EPL-4 4-16X44 FFP I put on a ruger precision rimfire but its also 1/6th the cost. and nearly half the weight(scope+ rings/mount)

Friends don’t let friends buy Barska

Old Japan mfg’d Tasco can be surprisingly good

Midway USA sometimes have decent sale pricing

Take a look too at Athlon scopes

Probably right. I'm sure there are much better versions of scopes being made in China that rival or exceed the quality of Barska. That said, I also have a pair of Aspen binoculars that are excellent....spotting scope, not so much.
