Changing oil filter only - 2024 Bronco 2.7L

I’ve been considering an early oil change on my 2024 Ford Bronco. It has just over 1k miles on the odometer for reference. I am hesitant to do it close to a trip from Texas to Montana in it. It’ll be about 7-8 months of ownership when we get back. The 2.7L v6 has the filter on top so I can change it out without changing the oil.

Pros and cons of doing it?

What does your manual say about the first oil change??

I doubt the oil is anywhere near used up, but the filter by 1000 miles probably has some metal in it. You could cut it open and see whats in there. Then maybe run it another 1k, and see what the second filter has captured There are people that don't bother doing any changes above and beyond what the manual calls for. And they still get a couple hundred thou out of their cars. Whatever floats your boat.,,

I wouldn’t bother unless changing the oil. How do you like the Bronco? I’m looking at one for my wife, a Badlands, Sasquatch, 4DR with black painted hardtop.

I’m pushing for a Bronco Raptor but she’s not having it.

How many miles will you put on during this trip? I'm only asking because I think you'll be fine to leave it all as is if you don't go past 4-5k before your 1st OCI.
I used to be in the "Change it early" camp, but I stopped that when we got the 2015 Chrysler. She's well north of 160k and isn't suffering any oil-related issues.
Didn't change the Mazda's oil until ~4500 miles. Only shy of 20k in her at this point.
The in-laws Buick didn't get changed until the 5k mark, and it's @127k. (Problems with everything attached to the engine, but not the engine itself. :ROFLMAO: )

I say go to Montana and change it all when you get back if you feel the need to.

So far, so good. My wife likes it too, judging by the times she steals it. Mine is a badlands Sasquatch with the mlc top, 4 door.

Couldn’t remember off hand so I put it in maps. It said approx 2,300 miles (1150ish each way)

ETA, haven’t ever been in the change it early camp but this is my first twin-turbo v6.

That would put you at ~33-3500 miles on the odometer when you get back home. I would just let it ride and change it all when you get back if you feel the need to. You're not gonna hurt anything.

If there are particles in the filter that's good, that's why you have an oil filter.

I'd change both the oil and filter now, or at 5,000 miles. You can make an argument either way.

If you change the oil now don't update the OLM. Leaving it alone will keep you on the appropriate maintenance schedule.

Drain and fill, leave the filter. UOAs on here definitely indicate a lot of metals in a brand new engine, anecdotes of longevity or not I would want it out of there.

I’ve done all of my last three new cars at about 1500 miles and they all ran great too. 😎

Yeah, you could change to the spec'd oil weight. It's a long hot drive and the oem dealer fill is a lower viscosity than the spec'd oil weight.

I always like a known 20 micron filter and known synthetic for an early change. Here is one discussion

Change both the oil and filter together. You are just wasting time only changing the filter alone.

I don't know of any engine where you can't change the filter without changing the oil. Even if the filter is located down by the sump, very little extra oil drains out compared to what is in the sump.

But I don't see wgy. Yes, the oil filter catches some wear debris, but what it mostly catches is oil debris and there isn't any on 1000 mile oil in a 1000 mile engine.

Changing the oil without the filter makes a bit more sense.
