Has anybody changed the coolant on a Mazda Skyactiv 2.5? I ask because when I try to turn the radiator petcock it turns about 90* counter clockwise and then seems to have a lot of resistance. The petcock is part of a plastic contraption and I'm concerned about breaking something if I put a crescent wrench or pliers on it. Has any Mazda Skyactiv owner had this issued if so what was your solution? TIA .

I have not done mine yet (still new) but some petcocks will turn 90 and then pull out to open. My tractor oil drain is like this. Dont ever put a wrench on anything your not willing to break, I am sure there is some trick to it, try searching youtube or a Mazda forum.

I am getting ready to do a coolant drain and refill this winter on my Nissan. Watched several YouTube videos I am surprised how favorable the plastic drain screw method is at the bottom of the radiator. Scares me to death going that route.. I am leaning towards pulling the lower hose. I would suggest the same on your Mazda

I think I’m going to pull the lower hose as well. I’ll try to turn the petcock 90* cc and pull it out first but I won’t put a wrench on it.

PS: I’ve changed coolants on many vehicles in my life and never had an issue with a petcock until lately. My 2016 Escape has a petcock that will loosen (and allow the coolant to drain slowly) but won’t come out. The Mazda also seems very difficult. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if this is another move by manufacturers to thwart DIYers and make you bring it to the dealer for service?
