Because I travel a lot for work, I only put miles on my truck on the weekends. So the truck is approaching 3.5 years, but only about 18k miles.

I know from reading on BITOG that air filters get more efficient with time, but I am also concerned about degradation of the gasket, and leakage, due to age.

So I am probably going to replace the OEM air filter when I change the oil in March.

Of these 3, which one would you pick? The OEM doesn't look like it has much of a seal, at least from the photo. I'd also consider Fram TG, Napa Gold, and PureOne. I don't consider the cost difference to be a big factor.

Mahle
OEM
Mann

On a related question - The Air Filter Sealer instructions say not to use on a clamp-type filter. What is a clamp-type filter?

I have heard good reports about Toyota OEM air filters. While you won't go wrong with any of those you listed, I would likely go with the OEM.

I've used Mahle and Mann on my VW in the past. Both are uniformly high quality. The Denso filter also looks very good, and you certainly can't go wrong using an OEM replacement. I'd pick the least expensive choice, or whatever one you like best. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these three.

Napa gold gets my vote. The one for my F150 said made in USA. Fram and Purolators say Mexico. Ymmv

Never thought about the gasket degrading on air filters. I can't talk my friend into changing the original on his 08 ram with around 80k on it. Even pulled it out and showed him how dirty it was.

I still have the original in my frontier. It's over 4 years old now but not even at 12k. I also have a spare sitting in the garage for the car that's quite a few years old now. The gaskets always seem pliable on all the air filters I've mentioned.

I usually buy the cheapest one I can find. I compare the seems and gaskets to make sure they are of good quality first though. Never had a problem.

In the 70's when the air was considerably dirtier, air filters would go 15k miles. Nowadays, with much cleaner air, they should do 40 - 60k easy.

I love the PureOne, i think they have a very robust design and the efficiency should be fairly high with the very light oil. I think you should be able to get more than 3 years out of a PureOne seal. I think i'm going to gamble on 5 years on mine and see how the seal is.

I put a Mahle in my Jag.

Noticed the seal was more substantial the the OEM one.

Was a nightmare to get it to close.

I am happy to use OE or quality aftermarket. Though i try to use the manufacturer that supplies OEM as they are usually half the price because they are not in car manufacturers box.

I am wondering if they make a PurOne for my truck. It is not in their catalog. Only the classic Puro comes up.

Thanks for checking me on that. I guess I still have a lot of other brands to choose from.
