i bought some ramps and changed my derelict friends oil in his 98 cavalier and i could not get to the oil filter so i just drained the oil and put in synthetic...i imagine oil had at least 15k on it along with filter...a el cheapo partsmaster...his drain plug gasket was shot too but luckily for him i had a spare drain plug that come off my sunfire in mint condition...i drained the oil before i tried to change filter so i had no choice but to dump it in...he is better off now then he was before at least...maybe in 5k i will go to Walmart and have them do a OC...i might take it to a mechanic friend and see if he can do it easy...the used oil wasnt sludgy or chunky and the syn should help clean engine so this wasnt a total waste

I use a cup that fits on to a rachet to pull off the filter on my car. Their is 2 sizes of these cups, each cup fits 2 sizes of filters. I bought the first one at Napa years ago, still works on my Taurus. I bought another for my wife's Nissan Xterra at Walmart, the Nissan has a itty bitty filter.
The only problems that I have found is the frams with their crinkle coat, it is just a tad bit large, after they are used sometimes you can get it to just barely fit to pull the filter off.
I would get your friend to go to Walmart and get a filter and figure out what cup-ratchet doo dad fits his appropriate filter. He supplies the parts, you supply the labor, cause you are a good friend.

The cav and sunfire should have same/similar engine. If ever have changed sunfire filter, then you know how to on the cav. Probably need correct filter socket for it. Some may remove passenger wheel, tis enough just to turn steering all the way to right for access to filter. Do this cold, exhaust very close to filter, as is accessory belt, be careful to keep it oil clean. I struggled before with my hands, wrenching is easier, but can damage/break filter if not careful. Is car derelict, or is "friend". Agree, you may be to kind.
Not to late to change the filter......You are like me in that you can't stand to see a car suffer.

If this has a 2.2L OHV try going in from above, behind the PS pump. An alternate is with it on the ground turn the wheels left almost lock and go in through the fender well behind the engine. The trans blocks access from below...

What did you try? Did you use filter pliers?
My favorite are my round jaw Vise Grips. Big round mouth - will NOT slip on the filter at all.

I bet I have 5 or 6 different filter wrenches/straps for vehicles I own or owned. If you look around I bet you can find some type of strap or wrench that will work.
This is a pet peeve of mine and is one of the reasons I rarely have a shop do an oil change for me. You'd swear the kids working there think that they are holding the entire car together by tightening the [censored] out of that filter. Too many times I have battled getting one off. Perhaps they don't have the sense to glob on some oil on the gasket before installing. I always snug it up and back it off a few times, then back it off a bit and leave it. It is always plenty tight 3000 miles later. klr
It would be easy for manufacturers to document tricky filter removal procedures under the hood, beside the emissions and vacuum hose diagrams. How often do you have to change vacuum hoses, anyways?

Just back of the filter is a wire harness. Remove the plug and you can drop 1/2 of this harness. This gives you more room. Use as small of a metal band wrench as you can get on the filter WITH FOLDED SANDPAPER(ROUNG ON FILTER SIDE AND WRENCH SIDE) You will have room to turn the handle about 3/4 inch. You will have to do this over and over until you can turn the filter by hand.
Don't forget to hook the wire harness back up. I did.
