Change my Amsoil EAO filter?

This is the first time I've used a amsoil oil filter and was wondering if I need to change it next oil change. I'm using QS Torque Power 5w30, and changed oil at just over 5,000miles on the jeep. I'm probably gonna run this oil 5,000miles, maybe 6,000, and was wondering if I need to change the filter too? My jeep will only have a litte over 10,000-11,000miles total on it when I do change oil. Is it possible that there will be metal in the oil yet from break in? I usually always change my filter every oil change, but was curious since these are supposedly a higher mileage filter. For the price, it would be nice if I could use them longer.

I use an EaO on my Wrangler and I change it every other oil change. Seems to work just fine, although I have no scientific proof of that. I would think by 11K most of your break-in wear will have happened.

What kind of Jeep?

What does Amsoil recommend? I have never used the mentioned filter I learned about the element type used in trade magazines at work in the 1980s or 1990s they hold way way more debris than normal type elements .They will go the distance for you.

I have run an EaO for more than 20k miles. I would not use one unless I was going at least 10k miles or one year. Every other oil change would be fine up to one year of use. Just too expensive a filter to use for shorter intervals, IMO.

This is the only place where Pablo and I disagree. I would not take the filter off. When you first put the new filter on and tighten it down the gasket compresses and takes form. Those gaskets are not meant to use over again. Just my humble opinion.

johnny, its a 08 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (3.8V6). wish it was still the ol' 4.0 though:)

I think Amsoil recommended changing every 12,000 or 15,000miles if your not using their oil with it. I'll have to check again. I have one more filter to use yet, but if you guys think its not good to change it every other oil change, I might try something a little cheaper.

On a side note, is there anywhere I can find specs on filters, such as the pressure the bypass valve opens at, flow, etc.? I'm using a Amsoil EA057 filter right now, but I've heard of quite a few guys using the Motorcraft FL-400s which is the same diameter, but longer. I've always liked motorcraft filters, but I don't wanna switch to that if the specs arent' the same as the filter my vehicle calls for. I'd run Napagolds, but my local Napa's buisness hours never seem to work out for me.

I was kinda thinking the same thing Johnny, but my reasoning was that I was worried about the oil from the "dirty" side of the filter contaminating the stuff on the "clean" side if I removed it to drain it.

I don't think they filters are tightened enough to permanently deform the gasket enough that it won't seal. I've done it before with no issues.

It will only drain through the filter. So the oil coming out will already be cleaner than the oil on the dirty side. Think about it for a minute.

You might be right. Tell Amsoil to put an extra gasket in the box. They can call it the "Pablo Kit".

This clean/dirty side thing is what I call (I just pulled it out of my behind this moment) the knizefamily filter study effect. The guy kept redundantly remarking about poor ADBV's allowing dirty oil to return to the sump....

..exactly where it came from ..in identical condition that it arrived in the filter at.

One pass or another on a full flow (probably a bypass too) has little difference between each other.

You would do this on such a new motor?

I wouldn't chance it myself with all them break in metals in the oil, that end's up in the filter. The filter's are pricey, but worth the cost IMO.

I would think you'd be better off going cheaper on the filter, and change it every oil change than to go every other with a EAO filter. ?????

Yes, i beleive amsoil says the filter is good for 25k/1 yr with THEIR oil.

I would run it at least 2 or 3 intervals of that length and I vote for not removing it for draining, especially if you are going to refill with the same oil.

I wouldn't, but he asked. Nowadays I change my filter every time I change my oil, but that's me and I go 12-20K, and have 15K+ and 15 months or so on the filter and oil right now.

This has nothing to do with " all them break in metals". Filter will still be doing fine at 12,000 miles of use, regardless of oil type. 12K really isn't much for a decent oil filter. If all the chips and chunks and stuff aren't out of your engine after 5K, you got's issues - filter's good

It's a comfort level thing. OP doesn't NEED to, he can change it if he wants, or leave it. I drain my filters IF I'm going to re-use them because I just don't like all the yucky old oil left behind. May not hurt a thing.

I just changed oil in '04 S2000 Tuesday night, this OCI is about 9 months and 4000 miles with Valvoline DS. Removed the oil filter, about 10-12 ounces oil drained from oil filter and filter mounting hole. The filter gasket was in good condition and it was re-installed. The car had been driven about 25 miles and no oil leak was found from the filter.

Thanks for clearing this up for me.
I change my filter every time as well; to me it doesn't make sense to change the oil w/o changing the filter.

You go over a year on the changes? What's your opinion on this? Is it safe?
My wife's 4.0L v-6 4-runner might see 8k miles when the year comes up, but i'm running an OEM filter on it and have yet to change it. Total miles on the rig are 23000. This is it's first amsoil run (ASL); What would you recomend? Oil still looks good and no consumption at all. 75% city / 25% hiway.
Change the filter and run her another 4-5k miles?

Stick with a year MAX with ASL. Same with SSO unless backed with a UOA. You have 4 NEW vehicles. With those, 1 year....again up to your comfort level with warranty and all.
