I have a JD LT160 with a 16hp Kohler Command. I nearing the end of season #2 running Amsoil ASE (typically run about 35-40 hours per year). Last fall when I drained the oil it was still very clean. I'm tempted this year to just change the filter and top off the oil. If I ran more hours I would not hesistate run ASE at least 150 hours. Any thoughts?

Well, if that was a car you would have the equivalent of about 1200 - 2400 miles on the oil, depending on your speed. I'm betting it would be fine to try your suggestion.

Why don't you send in a sample for a used oil analysis? That would pretty much tell you, wouldn't it?

if you're in the dry SW, probably can get away with it

in wet humid climates, like storing sulfuric and nitric acid into an aluminum container

why risk it.

go to a lower priced high quality oil such as Delo 400 and change yearly at end of season.

nothing like changing the grounds in a coffee pot. my dad is so cheap from the Depression he just keeps using the same coffee grounds for a whole week, adds more on top. worse than StarMucks.

IF you are using a auto filter, why change the filter?
The filter has plenty of capacity.
In the good old days, people would change the oil, but used the filter for a second oil change.
(every other oil change).
