Look into the Napa/Wix filter. On the FL-820S equivilent I see the bypass valve in the dome. FL-820S has bypass in base which is better but may not matter.

You can also see the ADBV material in the base holes. WIX and Gold were silicon (red), Napa NASCAR was nitrile (black).

Mfg'd by WIX is right on the NAPA (and Carquest) box.
 
Napa 1516 does indeed indeed have a dome end Bypass valve.
robl, you have to know what you're looking for. Go to the Wix Filters Web site and look around. Or if you're feeling a tad bit lazy this morning go HERE to see the schematic of a, Ford type construction, oil filter. pass your mouse over the picture and if you hear Angelic music you also have a description of what that component is/does.

Ford appears to obsess on the plate end bypass. So far, I've only ever heard of two members ever reporting visible "still welled" "silt" in a filter. I've never had any precipitated debris in a filter. Surely we've seen embedded larger particles in Auto-Rx treatments ..but never the flaky stuff that others have seen. This is the fear that Ford Engine division gets so anal about. This fear appears to evaporate outside of OEM/production and MotorCraft ..and there's no prohibition from Ford to the use of Purolator or other dome end bypass configured filters.
 
Thanks all! That's what I was wondering, I figured, why is FORD so whatever about this. I use the Napa Gold, (purchased here from fleetfilter) thank you! on My Chevy for a few bucks a filter, you can't go wrong. I like the Napa Golds. SO I thought I would try it again and run the Napa, but I see people saying things about this bypass valve. But I also see people saying how the MC filter and the Napa are both good filters. I guess either will work. Maybe I'll try the NG next time around!
 
Actually, so what you're saying is the WIX does have the end bypass? On that site you sent, it shows, competitive filters place theirs in the top, we place ours in the bottom, so it does meet the FORD specs then? In the bottom?
 
Ford's OEM spec (the filters that are seen on the engine at the production level) will have open/end plate end bypass valves. So will MotorCraft filters.

I never knew that the 1516 had a dome end bypass. This filter is almost exclusively a Ford filter (although some Mopar and others are also spec'd).

I never worry about bypass valve placement, personally. It really doesn't see much use with a good ADBV ...but..if you're going to worry about it (for those who do worry about such things) ..then, by all means, get an open end bypass valve filter.

WIX website is an example. Not necessarily how all their filters are constructed. Check out the nice "glass enhanced" media then go the spec's of your filter on website (paper media and calculate beta/partical size.)


The WIX site shows a base bypass design. I looked at WIX, NAPA , and Carquest filters for MC FL-820S app. All WIX had the spring/valve in the dome.

I don't believe the bypass location is a big deal. Perhaps if the filter is hanging vertical, dome down in a dirty engine in may be concern.
 
Some Champ Labs oil filters are very similar in constrcution, but obviously use different paper medias and Anti Drain Back Valves.

Yes, and I was trying to emphasize standard filters vs. standard filters like stp,st, ac delco. As opposed to premium vs standard M1 vs. st. i know there is a difference between high end and standard, but I was curious as to how much difference there was between filters like delco, st, stp.

Oddly enough, I've only heard of one member reporting "silting" ..collection of visible, non-embedded, particles. The filter is, somewhat, a "still well". That is, you've got a decent velocity change when the oil enters the filters just due to the massive difference in cross section. So it would promote "clarification" of any larger particles held in suspension by velocity. The lower area of the filter should be somewhat (poor word) stagnant ...just like if you've ever washed out a conical filter in the sink ..the water just pours out the bottom. That is, the oil's going to take the shortest available path to the outlet port. So, you're basically going to see a cascading decrease in velocity as you move toward the dome end. Naturally, one would reason that these pores will see reduced flow sooner ..and that you'll progressively move more/higher flows toward the dome as the accumulations progress.

I think a horizontal application would still experience the same flow pattern, but the accumulations, if you're one of the few who've actually seen any, would be in a more favorable settling spot. That is, I agree with you here.

I'm not one to sweat this either. Of all the filters that I've cut open ..even Auto-Rx filters, I've never seen any visible flakes or anything detectable to the naked eye.

This got me curious. The 51516 size I use stated "Paper" as the media in the spec's, so I e-mailed Wix and they did say it used the "Glass Enhanced" media.
 
I could surely be wrong, but I think that's a mistake on the tech person's part. Now the standard media may be some form of synthetic blend already ..but anything Wix publishes as "Glass Enhanced" typically carries a premium in cost.

This is just the first example that I could find.
