I just read on a car forum that SuperTech & Bosch filters had a production change in mid '03 to Mexico that has resulted in inferior quality. Any truth to this?

Champion Labs bought a filter manufacturer in Mexico back in the late 1990's.

They converted the plant to the way Champ builds things.

Champ put their own plant manager in charge there there.

But when they bought the plant, they signed an agreement no more than 20% of the filters produced there could be imported into the USA. ( this also appeased US workers who were afraid they would lose their jobs. They haven't, as actually Champ is expanding US production)

The primary purpose of the plant was to supply OEM's in Mexico and export to South and Central America where the import duties are less for goods made in Mexico rather than goods made in the USA.

Should a made in Mexico ST filter be avoided? I have a #6607 purchased in 10/03 that says "product of USA" and it has a "Y" stamped on the bottom (where it contacts the motor). What does that Y stand for?

With more and more US products being made in Mexico, why do we have ever increasing numbers of people coming here from Mexico to find work?

It's been said that "Y" means a certain thread diameter/pitch in champ labs filters. Someone will jump in if I'm wrong.

I mentioned this before.

The baseplate assembly, the piece with the inlet/outlet holes, has a letter code stamped into it by Champ to distinguish what the threads are.

As Champ stamps out their own baseplates, this helps QC as they are checked before the filter is assembled.

Because there are many small automotive diameter cans with multiple threads, this is how Champs resolves the problem of what baseplate is correct per application.

So if a "Y" thread is correct for your engine, then most other "Y" filters will fit as well. But then you need to worry about ADBV and gasket orientation.

People will see a gasket at the lip edge of the can ( called outboard ) and then there are the ones closer to the threads ( called inboard ).

Depending on the base where the filter is spun onto, not all inboard types will seal properly where an outboard is required, and vice/versa.

Filter guy. Can you (in a separate post)fully explain the Mexico filter ordeal including the Advance filters with different construction. This thing is spreading like wildfire on the Internet with AC phone line people telling people they are bad and need to be removed immediately, ect.

I would like a quote to put on my site, next to the filter cut aways.

thanks,
-T
