Hello again BITOG faithful
smile.gif
. Here for your viewing pleasure is a champ labs made #PH 2903 filter ran unknown miles on the girlfriends moms 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe with 45,xxx on odometer. Oil used is unknown. Put a OEM filter on with some QSED 5w30 she supplied. Looks like whatever oil was used cleaned up stuff. Date of manufacture is November 14, 2008 and 7:47 a.m. And "product of U.S.A." I like, and what do you folks think? THE OCI interval that the oil has on it is unknown also.

Wavy gravy man.. But that doesn't mean all that much in terms of function. Boy that oil in the can and color of the filter is a dark black.. very dark in fact.

Hope you are doing good this am Captain

I just wondered if you were going to out up some filters this am. Guess I got my answer. Right in time.

Only 45K with that much gunk in the filter? Did you check out the air intake for problems?

Gang: I did NOT put the date on the filter. No idea when the oil and this filter installed also. I changed oil and filter as odometer reads 45,972 now. Whatever oil was used did some cleaning yes

bbhero: my Longacre filter cutter will be here tomorrow also, can't wait!

. Then I'll hack member Branson304's tough guard and MC FL820S

Man I need to buy a Longacre. That six inch saw i got is all right but it took a long time to cut the Purolator Boss filter. Wore my hand out holding it. I don't have a vice or any other tools here. So it's a bit difficult to do. But it was and is interesting and fun to do too.

I really wonder which places use a filter like this to be honest as girlfriends mom didn't say which quick lube she used also. I like the construction and the holes instead of louvers

Not sure what the bypass looks like on that one - could that filter element have been buckled by end cap travel - like if bypass was stuck ?

4wd: if you look at some AC DELCO "DURAGUARD" or "classics" they both use that type of bypass since I believe Sayjac informed me that some engines have bypass in block. That's my thoughts

Also, girlfriends mom said engine runs fine and she didn't notice anything wrong. I'd say filter held up well

That's exactly the reason you don't want to use a filter that might fail and lets some of that collected grim through and into the engine.

Did this filter have the "clicker" style bypass valve ... hard to tell.

^^^ Yeah, I think that is what some of us here refer to as the "clicker style" bypass valve. That plate flexes or "clicks" when the right delta-p is reached to uncover the 6 holes in the top end cap to allow oil to bypass.

It's a strange setup. Those 6 holes in the end cap are straight through to the center tube, right? I think that flat plate will sit over and seal those 6 holes normally. But the 6 holes will get uncovered when the plate flexes.

Yes, this one uses the 'clicker type' bypass, same as the STP S2808 posted HERE. Weird design used on the lowest tier Champ filters. But I'll take it over a combo valve. What's clever is they use the same retainer spring portion on some of their higher tier filters with a traditional dome bypass.

Also judging from the position of the sealing gasket on the outer diameter of the filter, this is a downsized filter from spec. Spec for this vehicle is the 9688/3593A/14459 size where the gasket is more interior to the outer diameter of the filter. Can't tell exactly whether it's the 6607 or 7317 size or somewhere in between in length. But being a jobber filter not surprising.

As for filter, looks like it survived. I don't mind wavy pleats but prefer not to see angled pleating. But as long as no tear and with unknown oci, it's ok. Like the S2808 no media area leader but not it's purpose.

Thanks for pics.
