Chain oil for a 16" electric saw?

Can I use motor oil for this application?

It's a Poulan 3.5 hp model. #PLN3516F

Yes you can but it won't stay very long on the chain. I always use bar and chain oil for my gas powered though. It sticks better to the chain.

Motor oil is fine, doesn't have the tackifier, but its fine.

I have in the past used some 15w40 with a little STP added.
It seems to work well.

I just checked my stash and the thickest stuff I have is 0W30

How about 80W90 gear oil will, that work?

Sur will but it is much more expensive than a gallon of bar and chain oil

If I had to buy it than you'd be absolutely correct... Except I have a 5 year old liter of 80W90 that I'll probably never use. That makes the 80W90 the cheaper option for me.

Motor oil works fine, I normally use used oil, never had an issue, chain is always wet with oil.

Just clipped over 5000 pounds of oak branches in a huge trimming project. My chain saw has always used waste oil from our fleet. Works well and I get excellent chain life and little stretching.
