I wasn't sure where to put this question, but anyways...

What do you use to lubricate chains? I'm mostly interested in O-ring chains used on a motorcycle, but I'm open to anything.

Chain wax or Amsoil Metal Protector. Both dry very well and don't sling off. Chain wax should be able to be found locally at an ATV or Motorcycle dealer.

I like the Honda brand red-can lube. It dries to a thin film and does not attract dirt. I've had much less success with the various chain wax products and can't stand oily chain lubes.

I can't stand oily chain lubes either. I went through several before I found some that wouldn't sling crud all over my Gixxer. The brown can of chain wax was the first I found that was clean, thin, and performed.

A long time ago I use to use PJ lube, and found taht gear oil worked well but it made more of a mess and stank a bit. Application was more important than brand:

1. Get the chain warm, typically by riding,

2. Loose the chain adjuster,

3. Spray the chain in a section, roll the rollers and exercise the links. If the links won't move freely replace the chain.

4. Wipe off excess when done.

Try to avoid the tacky lubes. Like, PJ1 it would sling off and be a pain to clean off the fender, swingarm, etc.

A favorite of mine (even though the owner's manual specified using motor oil) is Bel Ray. It is like a heavy white lithium grease spray that goes on easy, doesn't sling and since its white you know if you miss a spot.

Another I am pleased with is Motorex. I got it because I was on the road and it was a refillable small can. Don't remember much about it except that it was good.

I second Drew2000, on the wd40 cleaning first. The dirt and grime just melt away.
