thanks for that, it's incredible...and possible where I live, as the seams are as little as a few metres below the surface (can see them in road cuttings).

Pity the land above them is so porous/shallow that the energy can't be harnessed.

I'm dead against CO2 sequestration. The stuff in the link is bad enough. Imagine a few million tonnes of CO2 popping up with "Hi Everybody"
 
but if it did take, the seam under here is pretty extensive.

The dotted line is the edge of the seam, where it comes close to the surface.

You can see Lithgow about middle then to the North East is another crop of Power Stations, Newcastle to the East, goes under Sydney and Wollongong...ultimately out to sea.

A single seam of coal, a few hundred kilometres squared.

I've driven through Centralia when it was still a town. Little stove pipes coming out of the sidewalks here and there. Drove around it a few times recently since they've bypass the town.
