Hi! I just bought a used 2015 CBR500R with 1500km. I know the oil has been changed once but for my peace of mind I'm going to change it before the riding season.

I've typically run Rotella T3 15w40 in my previous dirt bikes and in an older motorcycle I was using. Being that this bike is practically brand new, I'd like to run synthetic. I was thinking Rotella T5 or T6, but with the new formulation, I'm not quite sure. I'm also worries about the shear strength of Rotella T6.

Would Delvac 1 5w40 be a good alternative? This bike specs a 10w30. I was also thinking of Mobil 1 Motorcycle. It seems to be hard to find in Canada, but I'll probably be able to order from an Imperial Oil distributer.

I'm not too interested in spending $22 a quart that the bike shop is selling Motul and Amsoil and Yamalube for.

BTW, black goes faster and produces more HP too

Haha thanks. Are you running T6 or the regular and the new formulation or the original?

And my turbo sticker adds at least 10hp!

I have noticed that as well.

I've had T4 15w40 in my bike 02 CBR f4i for about 1800 miles.

My CBR seems to have chunky shifting in lower RPMs, gets smooth shifting 5k rpm or higher.

Since I've been running my bike in the winter will probably change the 15w40 out once it hits about 2200 miles.

I am too cheap, used 15W40(dino) and had no problems. No longer own the bike, sold it last year.

I've used delvac 15w40 in my XSR900 and it was good. Had a little more foam than I liked. Belray 10w40 EXL is a great conventional oil. Great shifting and not terribly priced for a motorcycle specific oil.

I use Mobil 1 mt4 10w-40 in my VStar 1300, and buy it at Walmart. Kinda pricey, but it is a synthetic motorcycle oil. If it ever goes on sale I'll stock up on the stuff.

Use whatever grade (viscosity) you like, just understand that you're not doing anything but wasting fuel using anything thicker than 10W30. It isn't getting you better protection. These Honda's (I have an NC700X with 45k on it) will run about forever even on the un-special GN4 10W30.

I would run a 10w30 gladly, it just seems hard to find in anything other than Rotella T5 which Shell doesn't recommend for motorcycles. Has anyone else had experience running this oil?

I'm also looking at Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck. I've read that it's nearly identical to Delvac 1 ESP, except with higher ZDDP and higher TBN. Seems like new formulations of Delvac ESP are CK specked and its questionable if they will be safe for motorcycle wet clutches. Not sure if Rotella is now.

So if anyone has any recommendations on a 10w30 (preferably synthetic) that's safe to run in my bike that's not absurdly priced. Haha.

If a 10w30 MC oil in synthetic is what your after amsoil will probably be one of your best options as far as price. 10w40 is way more common for bikes and you have more options. Not a ton of 30wt options. You may check your Honda dealer because the HP4 Honda oil in 10w30 might be your cheapest route.

Looks like Petro Canada Duron oils come in a 10w30 semi synthetic, a 10w40 full synthetic, and a 5w30 full synthetic that are JASO MA rated. Only issue I can see is that they are the new CK-4 spec, except for the 5w30. Would the 5w30 be acceptable for this engine or should I try the CK-4 10w30 or 40?

I use 5w30 full synthetic in my Honda NC750, which like your bike is spec'd for 10w30. I've encountered no issues with it, no oil consumption, and gear changes stay smooth throughout the 5,000km OCI.

Well I ended up finding some older CJ rated Duron E 10w40 synthetic at a local Petro Canada lube dealer. I bought two gallon jugs which should last me a season or so. Looks like they still have lots of stock of the older spec left. Price is lower than buying Rotella T4 or T6 (when not on sale). JASO MA2 rated too.

Hard to evaluate so soon (and the fact that I've never rode this bike before), but it was definitely the smoothest shifting oil I've ever used on a bike. Much less notchy than T4 (which I've used on every other motorcycle and 4 stroke dirt bike I've ever riden). Seems like a good choice for Canadians looking for an inexpensive synthetic that works great in a bike and is easy to find. Suncor makes a good product.

We'll have to see how the new CK product is once I can't get the CJ oil anymore.

Good choice Cessna. I use either Duron 15W40, SAE 40 or SAE 30 in just about everything I own including lawnmowers, garden tractors, cars, trucks 'n bikes. I save the 5W & 10W synthetics for winter, but the 10W40 Duron is almost one of a kind.

Being my '05 Kawasaki Vulcan 800 is water cooled, the bike shouldn't get that hot for needing 15w40, maybe 10w40 is fine, but I do like the 15w40 for distance trips because I think a 15w40 will shear down less and go farther between oil changes than a 10w40 , what do you think? I have been using Rotella 5w40 but thinking of switching to Petro Canada Duron E 10w40 Synthetic

I am wondering now, because my '05 Kawasaki 800 wet clutch needs a oil change coming out of winter storage (there's old T6 in it now from last year), and I have on hand Duron E 10w40 Synthetic and T6 5w40 CJ-4, so what I'm wondering is (if) I put in the T6 5w40 now how many miles/km could I leave it in there before it shears down that the T6 needs to be changed out? The only thing I'm wondering is would 5c be too low to put in the 10w40? If not then I'd prefer to use the Duron 10w40. Forecast says it will be going up to 6c next week.
