I have been using rotella 15w40 in my 2003 dodge cummins. Autozone has castrol tection extra on special and I am thinking about buying 9 or 12 gallons while it is on sale. I know castrol is great oil for gas engines but how does it compare to rotella or delo in the hdeo category? Thanks in advance...

I think that the Tection Extra is comparable to the regular Rotella T. I haven't used it in any diesel yet, but I bough lots of it when it was on sale and use it in most of my older gas engines with flat tappet cams and it works great there. The ISB is very easy on oil so I'm sure the Tection will work fine, hard to pass up a good sale.

Works out to the same price or very close around me. About 8 bucks a gallon. Castrol has been a great oil in all my gas engines. I imagine their 15w40 is a great oil also.

I hadn't realized Tection was that expensive. For about the same price as Delo, I would use the Delo. I bought a truck load of Tection for about 5.50 a gallon when Delo is selling around 8 a gallon. Still, Tection isn't a bad oil, and you could run almost anything in a B model Cummins and not hurt it.

Tecion held up okay tbn-wise in my saab for a few thousand miles (good for a dino) but sheered to a high 30 weight. But yeah, I got 8 gallons for $40 a year ago.
