i would like to know if anyone seen any studies done on a napa pro select oil filter.is a napa gold and a wix alot better than a pro select,or is it just marketing and charging us more money for a different colour of paint on the filter.also are the pro select reliable or not. please help. thank you.

Hi jamesonel, you never did say what was the oil additive that you used? Perhaps it was breaking down and causing the sludge.

My guess is that you did not break in the engine properly after the rebuild, your friend did not do you any favor by adding the additive during break-in period, your vent valve may be plugged, wrong spark plugs, and possible not spec oil filter. I'd do a process of elimination on any of these before looking at your owner's manual on what oil grade should be used.

i always used a supertech oil filter st 4967 and castrol gtx 10 w 30. i torn down a second garden tractor engine with 180 hrs on it that is identical to the problem one.the 2nd engine was starting to sludge up a little in the oil pan.same engine, same oil and filter, same oil additive.also both engine had a added blower on the cutting deck deck to vacuum my grass clippings,a definite extra strain on both engines in high heat weather.the engine i torn down with all the sludge in the pan had beautiful looking connecting rods and crankshaft.looked like no wear on them, they were like new, just a ton of sludge.i am starting to believe that 100 hrs oil change intervals is way to long for these engines.any opinions would be appreciated. thanks

i would like to know if rotella 10w30 is as good or better than castrol gtx.people say use a heavy duty oil like rotella 10w30.i have,nt seen any proof that rotella 10w30 is any better than Castrol GTX 10w30. this is for a air cooled 20 hp kawasaki in a john deere garden tractor.any help would be appreciated. thank you

Your gonna want the rotella. The addive package is better suited for a lawn tractor with a flat tappet cam. Its also a better oil than gtx in every aspect. Higher TBN lower NOACK and its less prown to shearing. So ya it can handle the heat of an air cooled engine better..not to mention rotella t5 is a synthetic blend..

Kohler Commander, forget spec
Kohler Courage spec for 5W30 and 10W30

I generally use 1L of Castrol GTX HDEO 15W40 or 10W30 (don't remember) plus another 1L of ordinary 5W30 Castrol GTX or QS PP, whatever is left from cars.

Works fine, no issues, 50hr OCI. However I generally run for about 1hr max, then take breaks (on hot summer days). I even started taking off the shroud to help cooling.
I think oil is fine as long as you try to manage heat. Running for 4+hrs on hot days is probably pushing non-HDEO oils.

In my case load can be high too since I am lazy and often cut late.

I run Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40 in all out yard equipment with no problems and very clean motors. If you can find Valvoline All-Fleet diesel oil it comes in straight 30 and 10w30.
