Castrol Gold Edge Regular vs Extended versions

As part of the Autozone clearance, I picked up 10 bottles of Castrol Edge 5w20 gold color bottles.

9 bottles are Sep 2012 and 1 bottle is the 15,000 mile Extended version made in 2014.

The 2014 bottle adds dexos approval and of course the 15,000 miles. Both say Titanium.

The product codes are identical.

Any idea if the product was significantly reformulated in the 2014 version?

I'm wondering what the specs of the 2012 version are. Can't find a PDS on it.

I think they are the same, the only different is label.

I've managed to track down the PDS & MSDS. PDS is slightly different.

MSDS is quite different:


Jan 2011: Castrol Edge 5W-20

Synthetic base stock. Proprietary performance additves

Base oil - highly refined CAS # Varies 85-90%
Trade Secret LB3032 1-5%


Apr 2014: Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-20

Chemically modified base oil. Proprietary performance additives.

Distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated heavy paraffinic CAS 64742-54-7 35-40%
Lubricating oils (petroleum), C20-50, hydrotreated neutral oil-based CAS 72623-87-1 30-35%
4-dodecylphenol CAS 104-43-8 0.1-1%

The oil companies are forever tinkering, 'improving', altering their "proprietary" formulas. This is one reason why mixing is allowed in my estimation. The average Joe wouldn't go looking for MSDS, he buys Castrol, M1, Pennzoil and just uses it not knowing or caring that a base stock/additives change occured 'six months ago'.

I recently changed oil using Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 and afterwards discovered that 3.5 quarts was SM and 1 quart was SN. I know these are different formulas but I reckoned that they were close enough
that it wouldn't have any negative effect.

I don't think you'd have any issue using these two variants of the same oil together.

PS: Do most agree that mixing the SN with the SM Pennzoil conventional would not be an issue?

I got a similar deal on the gold bottle also. I ended up with four qts 910w30) that were made in the very end of 2008 (GF-4 / SM) and seven bottles of GF-5 / SN (10w30)that was produced in 2012. It seems when the gold bottle edge first came out it was advertised as 15k oci on the back of the bottle. Later they removed the 15k oci on the gold bottle and somewhat recently they added the 15k oci again. My 2008 bottle say 15k but my 2012 bottles do not. The newest stuff is 15k oci. I will use the 2008 bottles first which will cover one full change on my 08 Impreza. In my case I should not have to mix but I would without a second thought. This will be my first go with Castrol Edge. The Subaru has been getting PP for the past few years. Before that it was M1. It has been hard to beat the rebates from the PP in the past few years. I have 2 current blends of PP waiting for the Impreza but it looks like those will be going in the Nissan as they spec 5w30 only and the subaru has a very wide 5w30-10w50 spec. We will see how I like the Castrol Edge. I am not very familiar with the stuff. The Castrol I use in the Triumph motorcycle seems just fine to me. The Transmission feels great in the bike. I am more bias towards M1 and PP in that order.

I do not think they are the same. The Gold bottle has shown itself to be more shear stable in used oil analysis IMO. It also was the first to use Ti, which they have now added to the black bottle.

He's stating a difference in two versions of the Gold Edge, not Gold vs Black Edge.
