Castrol Edge and odd pricing

I went to Walmart yesterday to get 6 QT of synthetic oil 10W30 for my Jeep. Castrol Edge was about the same price as PP ($19.50) vs ($21.00) for Mobil 1. However the QT of Castrol Edge was $2.00 more than a QT of PP. But they were out of PP in QT for 10W30.

I could have done a lot of things but decided to go with 5+1 of Castrol for the needed 6 QT.

The ads for Castrol Edge say its 8X better wear protection than Mobil 1.

So I find the QT pricing of Edge very odd and also find it odd that Castrol now has 2 grades of full synthetic oil.

And I now have it changed with an Amsoil Ea filter and 4 oz of Auto-Rx.

good to go for 8K?

The straight 6 2001 Jeep engine should do quite well given that it takes 6.1 QTs for a change, more

Walmart and Advance have been blowing Edge out at some real low prices.I cleaned my local wallys and AA out last week.

I have no idea about 8X better,i think its more advertising hype than fact,Mobil 1 is a fine oil.
Never the less i believe its a high quality oil easily capable of 8K OCI,at that price its a good deal.

I find it odd Castrol thinks it needs two grades of Syn as well, and even moreso that they thought the average consumer would be able to differentiate them.

Mobil pulls it off because they have three or four times the marketshare, and because the differentiating factor is in the name. Extended Performance is for extended use. Edge is for what? U2 fans?

Still, if I see it at that price, I might have to pick some up with the rebate. Four fifty is an eye opener of a deal, even in this rebate filled season.

Castrol has two grades of synthetic oil because one grade (Edge) is synthetic, while most of the other grade is "synthetic". I have BIOTG to thank for being able to differentiate.

But stores like Walmart only have so much shelf space and Castrol is not going to get shelf space for all their products. I say SYNTEC is removed from the market this year.

I like that the container of Castrol Edge says on the front "recycle your oil at Wallmart". When I have brought some in they do not seem to really have a procedure to deal with it, just say leave it over there.

Heck, Castrol has different products under the same label.
Most Syntec is probably "synthetic", while GC is probably the real thing.
Mobil does the same thing, although knowing what is in any given blend is far from an exact science.
FWIR, Mobil 1 5w30 or 10w30 is probably mostly group III, while, say 0w30 is mostly group IV, and 15W-50 is probably Group IV/V.
