Castrol edge 5-30

Hello btog currently drive a HM Toyota camry 5sfe with 280,000km it's been we'll looked after and would use less then 1/2 a quart between oil changes .
My current fill is castrol gtx 15-40 prvious fill was castrol magnatec 10-40.
Currently in Australia there is a sale of %40 off 5-30 full synthetic castrol edge.
Would this be suitable for my car or to thin for a warmer climate.

The year is 1994 I'm unsure of the factory spec before finding bob the oil guy I used 20-50 for many oil changes.

I would stick with a 40 grade. Castrol Magnetec is a real good oil, but if you want to extend the OCI you need Edge 5w40 not 30, as you engine is a mature one and the climate warmish.

I would not run a 30 grade. Sounds like you have had success running 40 grades so I would keep doing that. I have 411,087 miles on my Jeep running Motul 40 grade, so the 40 grades are not gonna hurt your engine. There is no way that your Toyota or my Jeep was spec for Xw-40 but as you can see it dont matter.

Oddly enough in a hot desert 15w40 is often the best oil grade range. If you live in a hot country don't check US pages of an oil company web site for guidance, use the correct page for your own country OR the UK page, otherwise you might get a CAFE related thin oil recommended. Japanese manufacturers also err on the thin side for fuel economy reasons, so check the Castrol, Mobil or Shell oil finder guides, as I think they all have a dot au site.

Buy it, but use it in the winter months...

I do agree with you,but we all know thinner oils of today are outstanding at protecting during extreme high temps,the 0w30 i use in my big block 454 see's lots of towing in 90deg weather and works fine,no its not the desert but still hot.

does he need 15w40? maybe maybe not but thinner lubes I'm sure will protect fine also.

Never mind the fact that there are places in the US that would make the Australian summer feel pleasantly cool, and engines last as long here as they do anyehere else in the world, if not longer.
To the OP, I'd say that learning from the experience of those in North America might be wise.
Your engine might actually have a longer life on an appropriate grade of oil.
Try the 5w30.
It certainly won't do any harm and might be a better oil for your engine.

Just forgot it is summer down under, but unless the OP is towing across the Nullaboor plain it should be Ok for one OCI, but not many folks down under use light oils. Castrol GTX 15w40 is still a good oil if you don't push the OCI too far. Silicon contamination in the outback can be an issue in OCI terms.

You never know till you give it a shot. Watch your oil pressure and listen for noises and watch consumption. If all is fine go with it. But If it rattles or drops oil pressure dump it

Hahahaha I defiantly do not live in the outback I live in a major city.
It's defiantly not to bad here temperature wise.
The cost of oil is so [censored] expensive here compared to us.
Here Mobil 1 5w30 is $90 a 5L bottle Mobil 1 0w40 5l is $95 that's why I have been using 15-40 it's on sale for $20 5l

I asked the same thing here for my Toyota. Castrol Edge 5w30 is an excellent choice. It is ACEA A3 rated, as heavy as some 40 grades. It is nothing like the Edge sold in the USA which meets Ilsac fuel saving requirements.

OH!!!
Then 15w40 might be a good choice.
Here, any grade you want of any given label is priced the same.
I can buy a five quart jug of Pennzoil Platimun for ~25.00 USD in any available grade, 0W-20, 5W-20, 5w30 or 10w30 for the same amount.
Heck, you could buy Mobil 1 15W-50, or most other Mobil 1 grades, for the same amount of money.
15W-40 oils here are HDEOs and are usually around $11.00/gallon jug.
I guess that I sometimes forget that oil is cheap here and any grade you might want is readily available.
