It still says API Service SP. I'm not sure what the distinction is between "API Service SP" and "API SP".

Often if a euro oil only meets only meets API SJ or SL, it's because it has more than 800 ppm phosphorus. Euro oils that meet ACEA Cx are allowed up to 900 ppm P. So if an oil has between 800 and 900 ppm P, it can't have an API SM or newer certification.

xW-40 grade oils are exempt from this requirement and can be rated API SP even with >800 ppm P. Castrol Edge Euro 5W-40 does have an API SP rating while the 5W-30 does not, probably this reason.

It has around 1000 ppm ZDDP, which is above the chemical limit for an ILSAC grade (xW20, xW30) oil, hence it's "only" API SL. These limits don't apply to non-ILSAC grades like xW40. So the same add package in a 5W40 can be SN or SP, but in a 5W30 must be SL regardless of the oils quality.

The oil is a full synthetic with ACEA A3/B4, plus the very rigorous OEM approvals of BMW LL-01 and MB 229.5 so it's a very high quality oil. I use it all the time.

It says "API SERVICE SP" inside the donut and "API SL" outside. Which I take to mean that it meets API SP in engine performance testing, but API SL in chemical limits (Phos content).

Same as the ESP one that meets the engine test requirements but not the bench test.

More of a feature than a bug in my estimation.
