Notes: Intake Manifold Gasket air leak fixed(gasket replaced) and EGR passage tube cleaned on this OCI. Also, oil sample container not capped immediately (allowed very hot oil to cool off a bit) which could have introduced airborne dirt.

Comments appreciated.

Interesting. I have a 93 Trooper with 120k. I haven't done a UOA on it yet, but it also uses about 1 qt/1000 miles. Looks like the HM oil reduced the consumption slightly, or do you attribute that to the RX? Has it always consumed oil?
I'm relatively new here, but from what I can see it doesn't look bad at all.

Wow. The Pennz. LL is REALLY looking like good stuff here lately. May have to jump ship and switch to that inside of the "regular" Pennz. Nice levels of moly, boron and zinc. Excellent report. I'm no expert, but I say they look great. Others on this board will give you better explanations.

Nice numbers! I'm running 5w30 GTX HM in my mom's 94 Probe GT, and will have a UOA this fall, but based on her very low amount of driving (50-60 miles per week on average) it probably won't even be close to 3k. I will still change it though, to have fresh oil in it for the winter time.

The truck consume a pint to a quart per 1k, IIRC the oil usage started around 60k. The Castrol does seem to burn off less.

Agree, the Pennz LL sure looks like a good oil but might not be the right one for this motor.

Looking forward to seeing the UOA of that 5w30 HM.
Are you planning of using the same oil for the winter?

I was planning on it originally, but now that my sister is planning to move out west, I'll have some extra Castrol 0w30 on hand, so I'm going to try that out in my mom's car next. With her short trips, I think she's better off with a full synthetic anyways.

I did use the LL twice with the UOA on the 2nd OCI and prior to that used Castrol. VOA of Castrol xw-30 shows 50+ Moly so the result seems to indicate that this was from this oil. As you pointed out, the Boron was probably from the LL.

I bought the Pennz 10w30 HM 5 qt jug at Wal-Mart for $8.97 and currently using that oil. The consumption rate seems to be the same as the Castrol. I'm happy with Pennz tho the downside is valvetrain noise on cold startup. While the Castrol was very quiet, I can hear some noise when using the Pennz. I might try the Pennz 5w30 for the winter tho.

Next 2 OCI will be the Lubro Moly 0w40 SJ with an analysis on the last one.

The search continues...

These are good numbers and this is yet another 40-weight vs 30-weight comparison where the 30-weight fared as good as or slightly better than the 40-weight.

pinoy99, you say that with Castrol the engine was more quiet during cold startup as compared to the Pennzoil? This must mean that the Castrol somehow provides some protection on cold startup.

What kind of Castrol? Castrol High Mileage?

"the Pennz LL sure looks like a good oil but might not be the right one for this motor."

Concerned that it (15W40) might be a little too thick? You might be right.

Was the Pennzoil LL the first moly this engine ever saw? If so, the follow-on results were bound to be better as the follow-on oil will benefit from the moly "uptake" occuring with the first batch of oil. Castrol uses a very skimpy amount of moly and I'd bet all of that 10PPM of boron is residual from the Pennzoil.

If you want a good 5W30 or 10W30 "High Mileage" type oil, I'd use those grades in Pennzoil. You can find the 5 quart (copper colored) jugs at Walmart and the per-quart price is like $1.85.

Yes, it is the HM formula. Does the Castrol provide better protection than the Pennz on cold startup? I don't know - It just seems that the motor makes less noise on Castrol than Pennz.

Thanks pinoy99. I might give Castrol HM a try. My car, a Saturn SL2, runs really good. But the very first cold start of the day, the engine runs kind of rough-like as if all the oil has drained off the engine. The rest of the day, everytime I start the car, no problems.

I like Castrol oil okay-I have never tried the HM. Only problem I have with Castrol is that it is supposed to have a poor pour point, so maybe it is not so good in the wintertime. But if the Castrol HM ran good in the warmer months, maybe I could use Mobil 1 in the wintertime.
