Carvana reports record earnings, tips wall Street estimates

Yea, a couple of years ago I wouldn't have given a plugged nickel for their stock.
I haven't used Carvana myself, but I have two stories about them. First, my brother bought a vehicle from them about 3-4 years ago. That surprised me, as he is pretty much old school. He said the experience was fantastic.
Next, my local hardware store owner (he owns a small Ace Hardware store with three employees, including himself), purchased a 4WD Chevy truck for store deliveries. They would only deliver it to a location about an hour away. He took his mechanic buddy along to pick it up and immediately his buddy said that the "transmission wasn't right". After reporting it immediately, Carvana told him to drive it home. As soon as he got it home, he decided the transmission was on the verge of failure. He called Carvana back and expressed the problems and he wanted his money back. They told him to drive the truck back to the previous location and the sale would be voided. When the truck pulled into the original location, the transmission would no longer move the truck and failed completely. The store owner did get his money back after a week. He said the humorous part of all this was Carvana relisted the truck on their website and said that the truck has a "newly rebuilt transmission", all before the truck was picked up to be towed away.

Carvana is a shrewd duck in the used car sales world. My sister bought a car from them 3 years ago, 2018 Mini Cooper S with 23K miles on it. It was in pretty good shape, except typical lease maintenance (minimal) some paint chips, curbed wheels and so on. She too said the experience was fantastic, dropped it right in the driveway, called her for a week straight to ensure she was happy etc. etc. She originally financed it through Carvana. They pushed in house financing so hard, she felt like it was the only option to make the sale smooth and speedy. She did, however, intend to refinance through her Credit Union within a month of delivery. They made her jump through so many hoops to get that accomplished and dang near wouldn't let her do it. Seems thats how Carvana operates, subsidizing loans for cars and treating you like a king. Until the ink dries and they have their money. I still get emails about once a month begging me to sell them my car. This, even after I told them several times, it's a 15 year old car with 150K+ miles.

I sold a car to them and would do it again.
I wouldn't buy from them. Seems that titling the vehicle ... which means registering it ... is nearly impossible for a month or so after purchase.

My mother-in-law bought a car from them this past winter. The process is very easy and she didn't run into any titling or registering issues, on the contrary, Carvana had everything lined up that it ended up being the easiest vehicle to register she ever had.

I would be hesitant to buy a vehicle sight unseen myself but I guess it fits a niche for some people.
