I have to say that the 2.3 is a very popular and extremely reliable engine in the Ford/Mazda line up. I know for fact that my Mazda engine was produce in Japan. Can't say the same for the ford products that use the same motor. Don't know where those were produced. I've heard that there are slight varations between the Mazda and Ford versions. But I can't find them when I'm looking.

The Ranger, Fusion and Focus use variants of the MZR engines. It's a weird relationship. To the best of my knowledge Ford owns about 30% of Mazda. Mazda designed the engines. Ford manufactures them separate and calls them Duratecs. Also, the Focus engine is not VVT. I recall the window sticker on my 3 saying "95% Japanese Parts Content." The OEM brake pads and dipstick say "FoMoCo" on them, though.
