That's nice. I had the opposite experience.

Yea very weird, so far it has not used any oil in 600 miles since the oil change. I used the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. I also changed the PCV valve a few thousand miles before this oil change and was still using oil. I have no idea why it is not using oil but I hope it continues, because to top off with Mobil 1 is pretty [censored] expensive. I just tried Mobil 1 because it had a rebate, usually I don't care which oil I use, but I wanted to try and reduce the number of oil changes I do a year, so I chose EP to see if I can get maybe 7-8k miles out of it. It has been using 1 quart every thousand miles for the past 3 years, no more, no less

Nice to see a good feel story about Mobil 1

either the pcv fix did the trick, or it will start using again. Oil brand will not stop consumption of that magnitude on it's own.

PCV change did the trick. Many years ago I had an 85 E-150 4.9L and as with all my vehicles I tuned it up and changed the oil myself. I decided to give it a tune up and change the PCV valve. I went with a Fram PCV valve and about 1500 miles into the OCI I had to add a qt of oil. The van was pretty old had over 100K on the clock and I thought the good old 4.9L was getting tired. Prior to this it hadn't used any oil at all no matter what oil was in the pan.

I pulled the valve cover to have a peek at the valve stem seals, and much to my surprise this engine was spotless, and the seals were fine! Now I figured there was a problem elsewhere, worn guides, bad rings etc. After a compression test and figures that were spot on with the shop manual numbers I was more confused. I later chatted with an old timer mechanic and he said change the PCV valve. I told him I had changed it and put a new Fram PCV valve in. His exact words, mind you this was over 20 years ago was to get that POS Fram out of there and put the Ford part in. Problem solved!

My bet is it was the PCV replacement and not the oil that solved your issue.

Good point a clogged PCV or one that allows to much flow either one can cause high oil consumption. I like to get the OEM one to be on the safe side even if it cost me 3-4x as much.

Yes the OEM is the only way to go. I learned the hard way by doing a lot of unnecessary work, when all it took was changing back to the OEM PCV valve.

My 2005 Grand Caravan which I purchased new (3.8 V6) used about 3/4ths of a quart of oil. Dodge put out a bulletin saying 1 quart per 1000 miles was in the acceptable range.

This was when I first started researching oils and came upon this site. At about 30k miles, I switched to synthetics. Primarily, I use Pennzoil Platinum. Yes, synthetics do make a difference. With PP, my "consumption" dropped to about a half quart in 3k miles. I do 5k-6k OCI's.

As far as brand, I am currently using Mobil 1 synthetic. At only a couple dollars more, I thought I would give it a try to see if it made any difference. I used 1 quart in 2k miles. So the consumption with Mobil 1, while not bad, was worse than with the PP.

I am not familiar with the history of your vehicle. Perhaps, like my GC, those engines are prone to usage. 1qt/1000 miles may seem like a lot, but could be in spec for this engine. I had a used oil analysis done while using the PP. It is very possible that synthetic could have drastically reduced your oil consumption.
