Car battery

Costco battery warranty in the USA is three years prorated...one of the absolute worst.

Walmart has three year free replacement on most flooded and four year free replacement on AGMs.
I have purchased my last four AGMs there...all are working great. Saved the receipts, the four year warranty is reassuring.
In the western USA, WalMart sells the same Clarios batteries that Costco sells. I believe out east Walmart sells East Penn batteries.

Sadly, Costco probably decided to change their warranty terms (which remain unchanged in Canada, BTW) to help prevent people from exploiting the loopholes in their prior policy.

If Costco feels that need, then can Walmart, which likes to squeeze out every penny it can, and abhors what it must pay in credit card transaction fees as part of doing business, be that far behind, and consider changing their warranties as well?

Then it becomes more a case of where everyone is cheated, not just the retailer.

I'm aware, and why I stated "Costco in the USA". I regularly visit Costcos in British Columbia, Canada. Fortunately no other major battery retailer in the USA has followed suit, after two years. No one can predict the future...but we haven't seen any other battery retailer follow.

Perhaps Costco shoppers are different than WalMart shoppers?

They aren't but no demographic is immune from doing questionable things.

Two years have passed, but that's no assurance.

The industry has shifted, and will continue to shift, over time.

Long prorated warranties used to be marketed as an indicator of durability, and assurance; they have largely disappeared. The boast of a 60-84 month warranty sounded attractive, but they paid peanuts in the end. No big loss.

What remained are the replacement warranties. AFAIK, most are in the 2-4 year range; I haven't come across one from a common brand that's longer. Costco was one of the bigger brands to eliminate them first.

Walmart covers all their bases, segmenting the market for coverage in budget/good/better/best ranging from 1-4 years.

In the current business climate of uncertainty, and reduced confidence, even profitable companies are having layoffs to burnish their books, including Walmart.

A product like a vehicle battery is less elastic in demand; they're often purchased under duress, not choice, and people don't have the option of not buying a battery just because it rose by $10, or its warranty is worse. Food producers take full advantage of this, and you end up with things like shrinkflation, or "frozen dairy dessert" instead of ice cream.

They have the room to play, and test the limits. Not to say they will, or will not, but the option is there, and every large company will have the staff do that analysis, and make changes, whether in warranty terms, ingredient content, package sizes, etc.

We've seen that repeatedly and if would be foolish to expect that car batteries would not come under scrutiny as well.

Okay AKhan. You are correct. The Walmart nearest me does not have an auto service center. But, I will heed you're advice and discharge battery. They do scan it, so maybe there's something in that scan tool that reads something...They scan it it across the top of the battery, where the cell caps are... I dunno. I will play it safe. Discharge battery. I don't want the Walmart Greeter lockin me up :) Thanks for the info.

Until they do they haven’t - so why bash Walmart for something they haven’t done?

If I buy a 3 year battery today then it’s 3 years for me. Doesn’t matter what they do tomorow.

Like I posted earlier, this particular Walmart has no " garage/shop" They only display batteries, oil, filters, and a few other odds and ends. It's like going to Home Depot for a battery. But, I do believe I got lucky at the CR counter. The guy had one hand full of sweaters, and scanning my battery with the other hand. He was a bit busy and probably made a mistake. I won't play games with them anymore. On a separate note, if you peel off the top sticker where the cells are, there are unsealed plugs that you can pop out to add distilled water. So, say you're battery is past warranty, you can just do that to add distilled water, or to check cells for any weak ones,, or just to check electrolyte levels. Of course this only applies to FLA batteries. They use to make FLA batteries where you could just pop the caps off,,,but they seem to be getting away from that nowadays. Most batteries die because they run out of electrolyte in a cell, and just short out. All you need is a small flat head screwdriver, and the little plugs pop right out. About 1/2" in diameter..... I remember, back in the day, FLA batteries had 12 caps. One cap had a sight glass in it so you can visually see electrolyte level without taking off any caps. You are supposed to add distilled water to an FLA battery, not seal them up with only 2 vents. That's why they die so quickly now. I'm coming up on 8 yrs on an FLA battery in another car,,,, but I maintain it.

I don't see Walmart changing their warranty, they only changed theirs to be replacement only a few years ago, before that the higher tier batteries were replacement+prorata. Costco has a much more liberal return policy in general, so they had to make changes because people were massively abusing it, also Costco used to just refund your entire purchase price and have you buy a new one, until someone that didn't realize how that was actually a better deal hired an ambulance chaser and sued Costco because he had to pay a few dollars more to get a new battery with a new warranty instead of them completely replacing it free of charge, and ruined it for the rest of us.

Okay, so, Costco.

7 members say warranty is crap, don't buy.
6 members say get it at Costco, good price and good warranty.

One of the groups above is wrong. Which one? I bought one of the AGM platinum ones for my son at Walmart. Seems good so far and good warranty.

Asking because they're building one 2 miles from my neighborhood. Traffic is going to be glorious with the Costco, and a Target all in same shopping center.

Well, for what's it's worth, I use Walmart because it's the closest to my home....,,,,and way cheaper than Auto Parts Stores... Heck, there's no Costco near me at all, or a Home Depot. So, I'm kinda stuck with Walmart. Still, that's no basis for you're decision.

I don't see what any other retailer really offers that's better than Walmart, pretty much everyone now is using whatever batteries are the most affordable to acquire in their region. Used to mostly be Clarios batteries around here, and Napa and O'Reilly would outdo themselves and source from East Penn everywhere, but in the past several years I've seen O'Reilly batteries from South Korea and Napa just uses whoever is a better supplier for the region now. So now it's like there isn't even preferential vendors, you should just buy your battery from the cheapest place that offers the length of replacement warranty you want.

On my last 2 battery purchases, Costco didn't have my size.
That's no biggie as I prefer stores + restaurants running out of things, so they get new in.

I even had to wait 3-4 days for a Walmart to get one of them (a G59) and I had to go to an Advance Auto for the other.
My need displaced any notions of brand shopping.

From what I've seen East Penn is pretty much the NE down to PA then most of the Eastern US uses Clarios, the somewhere out west they start sourcing them from the South Korean manufacturers.

You're out East so Walmart sells East Penn batteries...which can be better (or worse) depending on your experience. I have two East Penn flooded last less than two years, so not a huge fan. But other folks swear by them.

But out west...both WalMart and Costco sell Clarios manufactured batteries.
I only buy AGM, they are sourced from the same factories.
Prices are within $10 in all AGM sizes at both retailers.

So it really comes down to warranty. Three years prorated with Costco, or four years free replacement with WalMart...no brainer for me, WalMart. My last four AGM purchases have been at WalMart since the warranty change 2.5 years ago.

Clarios sources from multiple factories and countries.
Most of the flooded batteries are from Korea. AGMs have been coming from Korea, Mexico, Germany, USA and China. They will have either a sticker, or it will be molded into the side of the case.

The Korean ones on the West Coast are actual Korean Manufacturers like Dong Ah, Hyundai, and Hankook-AtlasBX
