Let me appeal to the scientist in you then. Looks are WAY deceiving, epecially as it applies to today's oils: especially Group IV PAO's. So a key here is the management of expectation/s. If anything the oil turning color is the indication the oils' formulation is in fact doing its job. If there is any time and real reason to do a used oil analysis/'s it is starting now!!
Mobil 1 0w20/5w20 is probably one of the better oils you can run in a Honda Civic. BUT, if you need to assuage that pit in the stomach feeling and decide to go back to conventional oil, it would be hard to go wrong with any of the top 10 (and I am leaving out inadvertently a few good ones) 5w20 Honda/Ford specified oils:
1. Honda OEM
2. Motorcraft
3. ExxonMobil Superflo
4. Havoline
5. Texaco
6. Chevron
7. Castro
8. Valvoline
9. Mobil
10.Quaker State
But truly even if you go back to conventional the recommendation is still the same, it is better to have the used oil analysis information at hand.
As for the increase noise, it is really the sound of LESS friction. I frankly embrace it and recommend you do also.
I have a 2004 Honda Civic going on 23,000 miles. I did the recommended Honda 10,000 mile OCI with oem fill (conventional). So as the logic goes, if anyone would get BLACK oil, a 10,000 mile OCI should be able to blacken it!!??. (oil was dark, but still brown) At that time, I went to Mobil 1 0w20, 3.2 qts. (oil was brown) At 20,000 miles I changed the filter stayed (with another 3.4 qts of) Mobil 1 0W20 (oil was still brown) . The only reason I am doing these short 10,000 mile OCI's is because it is still under warranty to 36,000 miles. After that, I have no concerns about running 15,000 to 20,000 mile OCI's. I also realize most folks think that is falling off the flat earth kind of action/s.
