I want to take a look at my air filter (simple enough!) on my 1997 subie 2.2. The housing looks just like the one in this video:

The Hayes manual says the same thing: remove two clips on the side and open! I remove two clips and can JUST BARELY open enough to see the filter. Feels like it is cliped on the back but I have not found anything. I have tried using almost full strength to open it to no avail and am afraid of breaking something.

Bring the car to Jiffy Lube, the mechanic wanna-be's will get the housing apart one way or another. You might not want the housing when they are done however. Bring super glue and duct tape.

it down and off the pins on the bottom of the lower housing. pull up the top alittle and push it down towards the engine and you will see whats holding it together on the bottom. The hose is so stiff it keeps you from moving the housing mutch so either loosen it or loosen it and take off the hose form the upper cover making it easy to move the top cover.
